CATALOGUE'S WIN

GREAT SURPRISE FOR CROWD (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright* SYDNEY, Nov. 2. The Sydney Morning Herald's Melbourne correspondent, commenting on the Melbourne Cup, says: "Catalogue stunned the crowd at Flemington by winning the Cup with ease. Sole credit for his Dreparation rests with Mrs McDonald. Catalogue is the oldest horse to win the Cup for 73 years. The only other successful eight-year-old was Tory Boy in 1865. Catalogue created history by carrying saddlecloth No. 5 to victory for the first time in the Cup.

" Catalogue gave his younger opponents a lesson in galloping. From the three furlongs onward the race lacked excitement, as it was apparent Catalogue could not be beaten. Bourbon, who came from a long way back, may have had a chance had he been brought along sooner, but against that Catalogue was never really extended, and his reaction to a challenge could not be estimated. "Shean said Catalogue was pulling him out of the saddle all the way, and was going so well that he never had any doubt he would win. a - Royal Chief the favourite, never appeared to be going like a winner. Bartle said the slow pace was against his mount. Catalogue's time was five seconds outside the race record."
