DUNEDIN CLUB NOTES A very busy time is now ahead of the Dunedin Club and this week the first of the series of races for children will be held. Yesterday the diving event for novices, 11 years and under, for the Ho;g Cup, was held. On November 9 breaststroke for novices, 11 years and under, boys and girls, for the Baker Cup, will be run off, and on November 16 the 33 1-3 yards freestyle, boys and girls, for the McTaggart Cup, will be held. Miss R. Fields, a new senior member, has the makings of a good freestyle swimmer and will be an asset to the club this season. , . Paula Whitehead should endeavour to secure more relaxation and concentrate on her kick. Doris Boock is a consistent attender at club hours and is showing a marked improvement. Frank Hogg and Beverley Mcintosh are swimming about in the shallow end. They are too young to take swimming seriously yet. Lex Ingram is training well and is employing a nice easy stroke. Marjone Jenkins is showing fine promise on the freestyle, but should practise a little more. Mater White, a new junior member, is very keen and is at present being coached by Mr J. Hogg. Miss .0. Ferguson is devoting a lot of her time to coaching the juniors. W. Wallace and P. Williams are both improving and should do plenty of work on the boards or swim bar. Sydney McDougal is practising hard and will soon be able to swim, a width. Iris Wheeler is shaping very well and will soon take part in competition. ZENITH CLUB Attendances are being maintained at the Zenith headquarters, ahd both junior and senior members are training hard for the opening carnival of the season. The club is fortunate in having the full use of the baths every night, otherwise with the increased membership it would be difficult for everyone to receive the same amount of training which they now get. Two hard-working members of the club are Mr Currie (treasurer) and Mr J. R. Bode (secretary). Thanks are due to them for the way in which they take such an interest in the running of affairs. Both also attend the honorary members' session on Saturday nights, and, along with Mr McEwan, Mr Main and Mr Lyons, take a keen interest in the younger membcrs On Wednesday of last week the first button carnival of the season was held, and proved to be most successful. Recprd entries were received, and each event was well contested. Young Mavis Bode did well to win both the 20 Yards Junior A Freestyle and the 20 Yards Junior Breaststroke. She has the makings of a stylish young swimmer, and should go a long way if she sticks to her training. One feature of the carnival was the excellent handicapping, all the races having very close finishes. In the 33 1-3 Yards Junior B Freestyle H. Russell was the winner, and, although the race was well contested, it was a well-deserved win. The 50 Yards Intermediate Freestyle was won by M. Buckland, who has lost none of his style during the winter, and the 50 Yards Intermediate Breaststroke was won by R. Dowland, who also swam very well. In the men's section J. Will managed to win both the 50 Yards Freestyle and the 40 Yards Open Breaststroke. He is also turning out for the polo team this year, and, although he is not very big. he still has plenty of courage. During the evening some satisfactory times were registered, and Zenith should be well represented at the centre's opening carnival. KAIKORAI CLUB There was a good crowd in attendance at last Saturday night's session of the Kaikorai Club, among whom were several new and keen young swimmers. , •' June Still, after two nights in the water, is making good progress, and with a few more nights will be able to manage a short distance. Murray Lawrence and W. Lennox are two keen junior boys, and with some good hard training each Saturday should develop into useful members. Jim Hermiston is giving them a few useful hints as well as doing some hard work himself. The first interclub carnival will be held on November 9, and members of the club who have entered are doing consistent training. The polo team has had half an hour s practice under the coaching of the club captain* H. A. L. Laing. An ex-secretary, and one of the keenest supporters of the club, W. Darling, has arrived back in Dunedin. He will be very welcome back in the ranks. Regular attenders at the Kaikorai Baths will be pleased to hear that the

baths at the Glen are again open, and wit hthe return of a warm spell will be very pleasant.. • - r " '■ KIWI NOTES The programme has been' arranged for the junior handicap series (under 14) for the club cup, the first race to be held next Tuesday. The events are: 33 1-3 Yards, 50 Yards and 100 Yards Freestyle, 33 1-3 Yards Backstroke, 50 Yards Backstroke, 50 Yards Breaststroke, and Diving. The club picnic at Tomahawk was a most successful and enjoyable affair, and the hospitality ■of Mr and Mrs- J. Pereira was greatly appreciated by members. The next outing will be held at Buckland's Crossing on Sunday week. .;'" •••-■.■■ A new member showing prpmise is Bruce penniston, who.should be.ready", for intermediate competition at the t club carnival on November 23. He has quite a good stroke, but should en-i deavour to obtain, a little: more relaxa- ... tion in his arms. . •• - -'•-•■ „■•-■ Competition is very keen for places in both A and B Grade water polo teams, and there should be no difficulty in fielding teams with the number* of players available. Don TEteid is doing fine work with the B's. and his captaincy played no small part in the B team's win over Zenith by 6 to 4. Roy Geddes is also showing facility in handling, and he and " Bill" Warren combined nicely in the front line. Eddie Dolan is a keen young Water polo player, but he must remember to mark his man. - - - : ........ The A team is developing good combination, but in -the match with Dunedin the latter were one short. Kiwi winning by 6 to. 2. M. Taylor is still in great form, and Bill Dyson promises to be a star this year. He handles .very, cleverly indeed. -Clyriton must endeavour,to improve his • handling and. throwing. A...: Ji Leederi did some good swimming With the ball and made some clever moves, but he did not always have the best of luck with his shooting.' •'" -\> ■'' Heather ■ Donaldson "is : a newcomer from the West End Club (Timaru) who should give a good account of herself in intermediate competition this season. She should endeavour to get a slightly longer pull through and make her catch a.little more in front of her face Janet. Scrivener, is another improving intermediate freestyle. '-■• exponent. . and. when she straightens her arms out a little will be capable; of good times. ' Ernie Benfell has the makings of a good crawl swimmer, but jhust, not spread his .fingers, and .should eh-.;: deavour to straighten, his legs. '.'' David Rathbone is a keen little junior ; who has only to maintain'his practice to make a good swimmer. Monty Goodwin has made a reappearance, and will be playing water polo again this season.: He will, also,, compete at next Wednesday's centre carnival. .... All A and B. Grade; water, polo players are expected to attend a practice at the baths to-night. Peter Young is training well at present, and will be competing in the .220 . Yards Invitation. Handicap at the centre carnival■, on Wednesday night, as well as in the 100 Yards Backstroke. . Valerie Clark is showing pleasing, form both as a freestyle and backstroke swimmer. She has a good, style, and is one of the most promising juniors in the club. Jack Stewart and. Vic Eckhoff are. working well together on the diving boards, and both will be competitors in the Otago intermediate diving cham- " pionships. :, .", \ The following relay teams will represent the club at the . centre carnival:—No. 1: P. Young. Miss C. Garvin, C. Kidd, M. Goodwin, No. 2: A. Thomas, Miss N. Lane. A. J. Leeden, P. Davis. No. 3: W. Dyson. E. Dolan, . J. Purdie, Miss E. Goldthorpe. No. 4: D. Reid, R. Blanchett. D. Barrett, I. v. Wilson. No. 5: W. Warren, Miss ■£. Abemethy, C. Lawrence. Miss H. Donaldson. No. 6: C. M. Garden. C. Sell. Miss B. Reid, N. McLean,. INTERCLUB CARNIVAL The centre's opening carnival will be held at the Municipal Baths next Wednesday, and the entries are"exceptionally good., interest being given to the meeting by the presence of a team from Balclutha Club, which is j showing great activity this season. All sections are well catered for, and a special 220 Yards Invitation Handicap has been included on the programme, the competitors comprising E. Toase. P. Young, K. Leckie, C. Kidd, D. Reid, and C. Lawrence. The 100 Yards Interclub Breaststroke Handicap should provide some fine swimming, as the starters will include EmBire Games representatives Winnie•unn, W. Dyson. H. A. L.. Laing, J. Durand, and several other useful performers. Otago is, rich in intermediate and junior talent at the present: time, and most of those who appeared at the New Zealand intermediate arid junior championships at Nelson last year will be taking part. Diving is included on the programme, and backstroke races are included in the open, class and for intermediates and juniors. The competitors will include A. Thomas, who gave P. E. Mathieson such a great race m the National 100 Yards Backstroke Handicap last year. ; ' The St. Clair Surf Life Saving Club, winner of the Nelson Shield at the ; New Zealand surf championships last year, will stage a special novelty de- ; monstration, and the meeting promises - to be one of the best held in Dunedirfor some time. , * •■, ; ; ■. r •' ■■ OBITUARY-, ";-.\-'' :; ;>. The death of Sergeant P. H.,C,l Boulton will be widely regret ted in al.'. sporting circles, but especially jn swimming, where he played a prominent *" part, being deputy chairman of the ; Kiwi Amateur Swimming Club for many years and a vice-president of the ;• Otago branch of the Royal Life Saving Society. - Mr Boulton's genial, pen- ~ sonality and his generous efforts to ; foster swimming among the younger members will be sadly missed, but his memory will be cherished by all who.; ,; knew him.
