Auckland Otago Association Dunedin. Wellington Association. Wellington. Canterbury Association Christchurch (South Island Championships) Tuapeka Association Roxburgh The broken weathei on Saturday afternoon, which interfered with all forms of outdoor sport, caused most of the interclub matches to be|postponed at a fairly early stage Under the procedure laid down by the association matches that are stopped on account of wet weather must be completed bymutual arrangement between the captains during the two following weeks Interrupted matches must be continued from the point at which play ceased Interclub Matches A start was made with some of the outstanding matches at Logan Park on Tuesday night. At the time of writing the St. Clair - Kaituna match is at an interesting stage, with St. Clair holding a slight advantage. Each of the three rubbers played went to the full three sets and two of them were won by St. Clair. Laidlaw and Swallow had a very even contest, in which the Kaituna man got home at 9—" in the third set Barclay and Sherriff reached set all and in the third set the St. Clair man went to a lead of s—l. At this stage Sherriff playing a fine uphill game, made a good recovery to lead 6—5, but Barclay finished strongly to take the next three games and the match. McKenzie and Fhillipps were also very well matched in a game marked by steady play. In the third set Phillipps jusl failed to push home his advantage when he held several match points, and McKen zie's steadiness gave him the game. In the Otago-Roslyn match Boddy defeated Sincock and Kaye beat Macdonald. I Falconer defeated Ross in the match between Cosy Dell and Anderson's Bay. McMillan cup tourney There has been a good response from clubs for the McMillan Cup Mixed Doubles tournament at Logan Park on Saturday afternoon, and the entries are well up to those of last year. Tainui has again " shown the way" with an entry of about 24 pairs. All the arrangements for the tourney are well advanced, and a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon should result. Post entries will be received until 11 o'clock on Saturday morning at the Sports Depot, and also by Mr E. S. Wilson. THE TEAM FOR AUSTRALIA As the three Auckland members of the New Zealand team selected to tour Australia during the current season have intimated their inability to make the trip, it has been decided by the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association to abandon the project. The three Auckland players in the original selection were A. D. Brown, J. T. Mayson, and J. W. Gunn, the fourth member being R. G. Pattinson, of Christchurch. One of the conditions of the trip was that each man should contribute £ls towards the cost, and this the Auckland players declined to do. Brown has just returned from a tour of England, and he lost no time in notifying the New Zealand Association that he would be unable to leave the Dominion again at least for some time. Mayson and Gunn, as well as Brown, have previously assisted towards a tour of Australia. In each case the sum of £ls was required and paid, and it is not surprising that on the present occasion certain players were unable to meet the contribution. The team chosen this year comprised young players and not a fully representative New Zealand side. It was selected with a view to encouraging youth, and it is a matter for regret that the proposal should have fallen through. COMMENTS BY FRED PERRX "Although I do not think Adrian Quist could have won in any event in the long run, I do think it was one of the dirtiest tricks I have seen in a long time, and you know from experience I have seen a few," writes the English professional lawn tennis player, Fred Perry, in a letter received in Gisborne by Mr S. J. Hines, of Australia, who is managing A. D. Locke'sDominion golf tour. Perry was com menting on the foot-faulting episode during the matches played by the Aus tralian Davis Cup team and his remarks were caustic. He had kept a careful watch on J Bromwich and was confident that that player was the next world champion if he took a rest when he returned to Australia. Perry said that Bromwich would be difficult to beat next year His advice to Mr Hines was to see that Bromwich did not play too much between now and the next Davis Cup games. The English professional was certain that the Australians would win the cup next season provided that Quist learned to serve without foot-faulting The team would, however, need practice against some really good performer as now it could beat all the rest of the players in its own country. NOTES Ellsworth Vines, the American lawn tennis professional, hopes to visit Australia late in 1939 with F. J Perry D. Budge and W T Tilden Vines who toured Australia as an amateur is very keen to see Australia again It is unlikely that A. C. Stedman ine former Davis Cup tennis player, who has returned to Auckland will be seen in much tournament play this season It is hoped, however, that he will be able to assist in the defence of the Wilding Shield, which was won bv Auckland from Canterbury last vear LAWN TENNIS UNION No fixture;- were completed last Saturday on account of the bad weather These matches will be piayed on Saturday Labour week-end was a busy one for union clubs, as tourna ments of various kinds were held The Holy Cross Club completea a Mixed Doubles tournament, the winners being A Rogers and Miss B.
