OBITUARY
MR A. D. McLEOD (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 21. A former Cabinet Minister and a well-known figure in the Wairarapa, Mr Alexander Donald McLeod, died at his home at Martinborough last night. Mr McLeod was born at Whakapuri in 1872. He was the member for Wairarapa in the House of Representatives from 1919 to 1928 and was Minister of Lands from 1924 to 1921 In the latter year he was defeated at the General Elections by Mr T. W. McDonald, but was returned again in 1931, when he defeated Mr McDonald.
Mr McLeod, who was married in 1897, was sheep farming on Kaikuri Station in his younger days, and later purchased Mangapari Station. He was chairman of the Featherston Council for 15 years, a member of the Wairarapa Hospital Board from its inception, t> member of the Wellington Harbour Board from 1919 to 1921, and a vice-president of the New Zealand Sheep Owners’ Federation and the Fam ers Union, He represented the New Zealand Government at the opening of the Federal capital at Canberra in 1928. Mr McLeod was also well known in racing and Rugby football circles, and was a good rifle shot.
MR A. K. JACKSON
The funeral took place recently in Christchurch of Mr A. K. Jackson, who was well known in sporting and business circles throughout New Zealand. Mr Jackson was born in Auckland in 1895, and was educated at the Grafton Primary School, and later at the Auckland Grammar School, where he first became prominent on the sporting field, becoming a member of the first eleven in his first year. His prominence as a bowler in the inter-school competition for the Heathcote-Williams Shield will long be remembered. He was a member of the Miramar Golf Club, of Wellington, and the Titirangi Golf Club, of Auckland, and a member of other institutions associated with sporting activities. Mr Jackson had extensive business experience in Australia before returning to New Zealand, where he later became closely associated with the electrical and radio trade, first with Messrs Ellis and Co., Ltd., of Auckland, and latterly with the National Carbon Proprietary, Ltd., of Wellington and Christchurch, of which firm he was general manager at the time of his death. In the course of his business and sporting activities Mr Jackson became known to a very wide circle of friends throughout the Dominion. He is survived by his wife and one son.
