THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam.” [Established November 15, 1861.] DUNEDIN, TUESDAY, OCT. 22, 1867.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

Now that it seems likely the Province will resume control of the Goldfields, the question naturally arises, whether something may not be done to make the Goldfields service more efficient than it has hitherto been, either under the management of the General or Provincial Government . . . Can nothing be done to stimulate prospecting ? We take leave to think there can. . . The Chinese are now coming in numbers, which bid fair, in course of time, to eclipse the Europeans, but the first whispei of a new field would alter the case. Thousands of English miners would once more flock into the Province, which most of those who vacated it left with regret. , . . . - There can be no question what a new rush to Otago would mean now. Trade is settled, and the resources for enlarging it are ample. A new rush on a large scale now would mean an advantage to every class of the community Farmers, runholders. merchants, and storekeepers would alike benefit by it; there would be the prosperity unalloyed with much of the feverish excitement and speculation of old We firmly believe if remains with the people themselves to cause such a search to be made as will bring to light a new Goldfield, or new Goldfields, sufficiently attractive to re-people the Province with the mining population it has lost: and. perhaps, to add largely to it We commend to every one interested the desirability of encouraging prospecting on a systematic and energetic scale. A phonographic class is about to be opened in tbe Long Room of the Athenaeum by Mr J. G. Diack The -idvantage of the attainment of so useful an art needs no recommendation There was a meeting of the Moray Place Social Improvement Society last evening in the hall beneath the Congregational Church. It was announced as “the first social meeting” of the Society; but the term was somewhat a misnomer, as all the meetings held under iho auspices of (he same Society have been of a very plen.-ant and social character, ft was, rather, the most “social” meeting hold by the Society. . . A meeting of the Regatta Committee was held last evening at the London Hotel Captain Hepburn was in the chair. Messrs Gibbs and Copeland reported that, with Mr Haggitt, they v piled upon His Honor the Superintendent and His Worship the Mayor t.nd had received their consent to become Patrons, and their promise t- support the annual regatta as far as lav in their power The third anniversary of the Loyal Albion Lodge M.U.1.0.0.F., was celebrated last evening by a supper held in Farley’s Hall.
