THE GORE RACING CLUB

OPENING OF SPRING MEETING EXCELLENT FIELDS ENGAGED MILFORD AMONG THE FAVOURITES

The card for the Gore Racing Club's spring meeting should fill the stand and enclosures if the promise of good racing is any criterion in that direction. The fields will provide a good basis for betting and the club, with favourable weather, should have a successful meeting to put on record. The Waikaka Handicap has a good field of useful handicap horses. The top weight, Milford, was second to Last Refrain in the Mosgiel Handicap, when the former, in receipt of 81b, suffered a head* defeat. Milford, in receipt of 111 b, beat Last Refrain in the Ranfurly Handicap, with High Glee third, and the unplaced lot included Petersham 8.11, Valantua 8.0, and Pink Robe 7.13. Last Refrain now. meets Milford on Sib better terms than when he beat him in the MoSgiel Handicap. Milford, however, was a much improved horse when he won. He has been sent up 131 b on what he carried in the Ranffirly Handicap and now meets Last Refrain on 12lb. Petersham on 161 b, Valantua on 151 b and Pink Robe on ,161 b worse terms. Newcomers against the above lot are Araboa, Made Money, Nightwings, Ardchoille and Ocean Singer. Made Money won at Ashburton and at Gore will meet Petersham on 131 b and Last Refrain on 81b better terms. A repetition of Ashburton form would make Made Money very dangerpus. Araboa did not show up in his race at Wingatui, but put up a good performance when he won at the Grand National meeting. On that occasion Araboa was giving the unplaced Petersham 101 b and now meets the latter on 81b better terms. High Glee will not be a starter. Valantua has gone out of favour, but nevertheless looks bright and well and apparently ready to repeat his best form. Made Money and Nighwings should provide a lot of trouble to the top weights. Nightwings won in good style at Wingatui and bears an improved appearance.

The Flying Handicap will be run at Such a light scale of weights that the race may be decided at the barrier as experienced ’ riders may not be available. Rodeur has not been seen out this season, but scored four wins apd seven placings out of 23 starts last season. In her last placed performance Rodeur was a close third with 8.0 to Lazybones 7.9 and Golden Chest 7.5 at Timaru with a fairly good lot behind the places. Viking should be improved by his trip to Wingatul, where he looked rather big in condii tion. At Geraldine Valmarch 8.9 was third to Cocksure 8.6 and Second Innings 8.0. Ballad 7.2 and Silver Sail 7.9 were unplaced. Valmarch Is dropped 71b at Gore and this seems completely to extinguish the chance held by Ballad and Silver Sail, Moneyless can go fast and Norseman ran a good race on the second day at Wingatui when Nightwings beat him. Roseman is again galloping well and Peony Rose and Astaire look the pest of the light weights. Peony Rose Ivon four races last season and was also placed six times out of 16 starts, Her last win was at Invercargill, Where she won over seven furlongs With 7.2 by over a length from Rodeur 0.1, with Roseman 8.1 and Moneyless f .13 unplaced. At the Dunedin winter meeting Peony Rose 8.3 was third to Araboa 8.5 and Nightwings 8.1 over Steven furlongs, and on the third day of the meeting finished third with 8.5 to Valmarch 8.6 and Dissemble 8.0 in the Empire Handicap. Valmarch, Norseman, Peony Rose, and Astaire (if reserved) will find support. The following may be amongst those fancied for their engagements:— Mandeville High Weight Handicap.— Vantoon, Hunting Chorus, Ardmayle. Gordon Hack Handicap—Boswell. Adina, Natty or Lord Nuffield. Walkaka Handicap.—Milford, Nightwings. Made Money. Balfour Trot.—Provincial, Dewey Bell, Royal Chief. Novice Handicap.—Attractive Note Vallock, Disband. Trillo will shortly hand in his riding licence, as he to take up commercial life. A fellow horseman, R. Beale, took the same action last month, and is now in business in the Akaroa district. Bad Behaviour • It would be difficult to fault Te Hero on the score of appearance, and there Is no doubt about him being able to gallop, but his sour-tempered demeanour does not make an appeal. He will have to improve in his behaviour to be greatly appreciated as a racehorse. Beau Llvre’s Owner •Mr W, Higgins, whose colours were successfully carried by Beau Livre in the Wellesley Stakes, has been in Lon,don. and underwent a serious operation. His state of health is a matter of grave anxiety to his family and many friends. Punters’ Grave Yard The opinion that Trentham Is a punters’ grave yard grew stronger as a result of the first day’s racing. The fields, are made up by horses from different parts, and that makes it difficult to get a line on them. Owners

TROTTING NOTES

and trainers are fully aware that it takes a good horse to win at Trentham, and hence only the best in training are taken there. The draw for position, the start, and the luck of the run may prove very important factors in bringing about the result. The close finishes in some of the races on the first day suggest that if they were •run over again at the same weights two or three different horses might win on each occasion. It will be seen that such a state of affairs makes punters careful, but nevertheless they are very keen, as, despite the open nature of the fields, long lines attacked the totalisator as if winners were easy to locate.

King’s Horse Wins . His Majesty scored a victory in the Dunnington' Castle Maiden Plate at Newbury at the end of September, when Wavelength won in a field of 21 by two lengths. It was a popular win. the horse being heavily supported, and the result was the signal for an outburst of cheering.

Won Easily Daniel Defoe, who easily won the two-year-old handicap at Trentham on tThursday, was making his first appearance in a race, but he had led two “ parades ” at Wanganui and Awapuni. Trained by L. G. Morris, he is raced in partnership by his trainer and Mr L. H. Collinson. Daniel Defoe was troublesome at the barrier, but got away well, and with Pas de Cheval was soon clear of the others. Shaking off the top-weight in the straight, the big Defoe colt won easily from Scandal, with Portal and Pas de Cheval next.

Rebel Mate Savaged Rebel Mate got savaged by Willie Win on the voyage from Lyttelton, and has a badly-bitten hock Screamer

In the final race Screamer stayed on, and may do better as a result of the race. He swerved when leading about halfway up the straight, and then came on again. Unlucky Apart from Silver Sight, the South Island horses were unlucky in their engagements on the first day at Trentham. Redolent was lame after the Hurdle Race. Wild Chase drew the outside in the Wainui Handicap, and had to cover a lot of extra ground, while Dictate got badly away in the same race, and may do better. Argentic is on the improve, but requires more ground than a mile. Counterblast was unlucky enough to draw number 25 in the Rimutaka Handicap,

EVICUS,

and did well to finish close up. Toro Koura also drew wide out at 16, and was never sighted. Trench Fight showed a return to the highly-strung temperament which he displayed at Riccarton, and fell from form on that account. It is doubtful if he will ever make a stayer. Lazybones ran a fair race, and Cape Gabo, after tailing the field to the straight, finished sixth.

By Sentinel Should Win Soon Three Bells was much too good for Isabel Derby in a serviceable trial over two miles at Addington on Wednesday. He paced the first half-mile in Imin 12sec, the mile in 2min 23 2-ssec, the mile and a-quarter in

2min 59sec, the mile and a-half In 3min 34sec, and the full distance in 4min 41 2-ssec. Three Bells is in great heart, and should soon win a race.

Has Trained On At Addington on Wednesday Sage King and Sentiment paced a mile and a-hajf in 3min 30 2-ssec, which was equivalent to 3min 24 2-ssec. Sentiment impressed most, and has trained on satisfactorily since he won at Wellington’in September. Cup Candidates

The Hannon Memorial Handicap at Oamaru on Labour Day should be one of the features of the meeting, as seve - ral New Zealand Cup candidates will be among the runners. A Fine Field

The President’s Handicap at Oamaru has draw a fine field, and the race looks very open. The ante-post favourites are Cantata, Carver Doone, and Ginger Jack. More Solid-Now Timworthy trotted, well all the way while covering two miles in 4min 54sec at Addington on Wednesday. The first mile was left behind in 2min 29sec. He has ability, and is gaining solidity with age and experience. AT TRENTHAM SECOND DAY OF MEETING DEFAULTER IN STAKES (From Our Special Reporter) WELDUnGTUJN, Oct. 21. A heavy tali of ram followed the conclusion 01 the first day at Trentham and will improve the going tor tna second day's card. Silver Sight was doing his best when ridden out to win the Glen Hurdles, and he now meets Southern Blood on 71b and Ambition on 121 b worse terms in the Rimu Hurdles. The shorter distance is against Sunee, who was slaying on in the Glen Hurdles, more apparently than actually, because the leaders were stopping at the end of a fast-run race. Silver Sight will again be dangerous, and Ambition and Southern Blood should supply considerable trouble. The field of 30 in the Trial Stakes suggests that the draw for position and the luck of the running will be a big factor in helping a chance, and it is not a betting proposition. The Trentham Stakes should be a very interesting face, as it supplies an opportunity for Defaulter to measure strides against Te Hero, Colfort, Gay Son and other good sorts of the same age. Defaulter won the Dunedin Guineas so well that he will probably start favourite. Accomplice won the October Handicap in good style, but with 9.0 up she may find it hard to give weight to Night Dress over a mile and a-quar-ter in the Heretaunga Handicap Winning Rival is in receipt of 101 b from Daniel Defoe in the Karitane Handicap, and although he looks as if he will improve with a race or two, the filly has a good advantage in the weights through being unlucky on the first day. Of those engaged in the Watkins Handicap. Sly Fox shaped well on the first day. Kinnoull, Willie Win, Francis Drake, and Dictate must also come into consideration.

Gay Chou is sure to be a wellbacked horse for the Awatea Handicap. He meets Alunga on 51b better terms for a narrow defeat in the Shorts Handicap. Laughing Lass and Brunhild will be improved by racing on the first day. but the most danger to the top-weight may come from Florence Mills and Counterblast, who both shaped well under big weights on the first day. In the Belmont Handicap Royal Star II will have a chance to redeem his failure on the first day. and others that may be fancied are Rotoma, Hagen. Trebor, and Sigurd, The public may endeavour to finalise results of the betting as follows: Rimu Hurdles.—Silver Sight, Southern Blood, Ambition. Trial Stakes.—Beau Partir. Screamer, Namara.

Trentham Stakes.—Defaulter. Te Hero. Colfort.

Heretaunga Handicap-Nightdress, Accomplice. Erlick. Karitane Handicap.—Winning Rival. Daniel Defoe, Submission. Watkins Handicap.—Sly Fox. Kinnoull. Dictate.

Awatea Handicap.—Gay Chou. Florence Mills. Counterblast. Belmont Handicap.—Hagen, Royal Star 11. Trebor. The fields are as follow; —

Large and well-balanced fields are featured for the first day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s spring meeting, which will be opened at Alexandra Park, Epsom, to-morrow. A large number of visiting horses will give added interest. While the veteran champion, Harold Logan, is on impossible marks, he will be an attraction on account of his popularity and great deeds of past years. If the weather remains fine the course will be in splendid order, and speed should be a factor of many interesting contests. Class is well represented in the Jcllicoe and Electric Handicaps, and for the first-named event Kenworthy and Proletarian, who ran first and second in the August Handicap, will have a big following. If reserved for the sprint. Kenworthy

would take some beating, although the brilliant Nervie’s Last looks the pick of the handicap. Interest is keen in the meeting of Uenuku, Equipoise, and Parauri, a good batch of four-year-olds, in the Parnell Handicap, but they will have strong opposition from Isabella Pointer. The promoted novices, Stargum and Tommy McElwyn, will keep the good field busy in the October Handicap. The following may be in favour in the respective events:— 12.0—Waitemata Trot.—Dick Reawood, Bingen Chimes, Gay Moko. 12.40—Improvers’ Handicap.—Hero Oro.
