CHRISTMAS SHOPPING
DEPARTURE FROM CUSTOM FRIDAY AS LATE NIGHT Christmas Day this, year Jailing on a Sunday will necessitate some departure from the usual Christmas: shopping, conventions. _ Local retailers will observe Friday as th® late night for Christmas Eve shoppers, and their premises will again, be open on Saturday, Christmas Eve, until noon. The same procedure will be followed the next week-end, the only difference being: that shops will close at 10 p.m. on Friday, December 23, an hour later than usual, and at 9 p.m. again on December 30. . ' :
Another question to be dealt with will be that of a compensating holiday owing to the fact that Christmas Day falls on a Sunday. In accordance’ with existing awards this will be observed or the day after Boxing Day, which will mean that the shops will not be reopened until the Wednesday,/ New Year’s Day will also be compensated for.' r : ,• It is anticipated b* r retailers that the extra Saturday morning’s shopping after the “Christmas Eve” trade of the Friday night, will result in an extension of the customary period of hectic buying of last-minute Christmas gifts. ;/■
