WOODHAUGH GARDENS
IMPROVEMENTS TO PARK MODEL SPEED BOAT POND Chief-among- the improvements at nresent .eing effected at the Woodhaugh Gardens is the construction of a model speedboat pond for the Model Engineering Club. Here, in the near future speed marathons in miniature will be held with the petrol driven models of club members as contestants. At present only one such pond exists in the Dominion. This is at Nelson, and enthusiasts in the nor + hern centre are already taking a keen interest m the local club’s venture, even to the point of forwarding entries at this early date for the first championship to be held on the new pond. The Work of construction is being carried out by the Reserves Department of the City Council under the direction of Mr D. Tannock, and is providing useful employment for men’ under the No. 13 Employment Scheme. The excavation of the bowl of the pond is now almost completed, and the formation of the bottom is under way. The first step is the provision of a, clay sludge surface which will carry an overburden of shingle, so that the water will always be clean. The pond, which is circular, and 20 to 30 yards in diameter will be about one foot deep, with an island in the centre, round which the speed trials and tests will be held. The water for the pond will be drawn from the overflow from the paddling pool in the bush, Mr Tannock still entertains a nope that the completion of this second unit will pave the way for a start to be made on the swimming pool in Woodhaugh, which should be able to draw ! ts supplies of water from the same source as the paddling and model boat ponds, and finally drain away into the Leith,. Another’ major operation in progress at Woodhaugn is the laying down of a second bowling green on a site adjacent to the Leith Club s present green. This work is still in its preliminary stages, but when completed it should provide a very acceptable addition to the sporting amenities of the North End. It also is being carried out under the No 13 Scheme and under the direction of the Superintendent of City Reserves.
