WHERE IS NEW ZEALAND?
TO THE EDITOB Sir,—A friend of mine who has just returned to Dunedin after a lengthy visit to Germany told me that he was astonished at the lack of knowledge of 'New Zealand, or even its whereabouts. on the part of the people there. I remarked that that was rather strange, in view of the fact that the New Zealand soldiers had fought in the Great War. He replied that he had travelled largely in the eastern part of Germany, and that that might account for it. One German girl who could speak perfect English and with whom he conversed had not even heard of New Zealand. The Dunedinite did, however, discover one German who had heard of New Zealand. He was attending a party and was asked about New Zealand. He tried to tell them about his country, but not one of those present, with a single exception, knew anything of New Zealand. The exception turned out to be an ornithologist, and he remarked that New Zealand was the country where the moa had lived! So much for the eyes of the world, and Mr J. W Munro.—l am, etc., Punk.
