Mrs W. R. Hayward is visiting Christchurch, where she is the guest of her daughter, Mrs N. S. Woods.
Miss I. Herrick has returned from a visit to Miss Janet Miller, of Timaru.
Miss Doreen Raymond has returned to Timaru after a visit to Mrs Garth Galloway.
Mrs W. H. Duke left by the Awatea this week on a visit to Australia. She is accompanied by her sister, Miss Morley, of Christchurch, and will be away for about three months.
Mr and Mrs W. D. Naylor, of Cromwell, have been touring in Great Britain and on the Continent. They are now in the south of England (says our London correspondent, writing on September 22) spending the remainder of their holiday before returning to New Zealand by the Arawa, leaving on September 30.
Miss Kitty Mclnnes, of St. Clair, was hostess at a “ pantry ” afternoon yesterday given in honour of Miss Billie Mitchell, a bride-elect. Those present included Mesdames George Bell, A. L. Brown, Wilson Johnson, John Borick, and Misses Noel McGeorge, Doris Wallace-Watson and Betty Harris. The guest of honour was presented with a shoulder spray of anenomes and freesias.
Teams from both the North and South Canterbury areas, together with the local winning team, will compete at the South Island elimination festival of the British Drama League in the Concert Chamber next Tuesday night. Hostesses to the visiting teams include Lady Sidy, Lady Sargood, Mrs A. C. Stephens, Mrs E. Griffin, and Mrs O. C. Stephens. The judge for the festival, Miss Elizabeth Lge. will be the guest of Mrs Sutherland Ross, president of the local branch of the British Drama League. * * *
Miss Sheila Hunter, of Balclutha, brought from the Browne Pack in Balclutha a parchment scroll which (says our London correspondent, writing on September 22), with the assistance of the High Commissioner for New Zealand, she presented to the 9th Westminster Brownie Pack at Napier Hall, in London. Miss Hunter was asked by the Westminster Pack to take back with her for the New Zealand Pack a book containing photographs of their Majesties the King and Queen, the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose, the Princess Royal, the Chief Guide and the Chief Scout. The subject of the photograph in each case appears in uniform either as a Scout. Guide or Brownie. In the book also are the signatures of many Guides, Brownies, and interested visitors, some from New Zealand.

Mr and Mrs T. J. Stephens, of Oamaru, have done a considerable amount of travelling in the Old Country and on the Continent since they arrived in England early in the year (says our London correspondent, writing on September 22). They have motored through Holland, Belgium, France. Germany, Italy and Switzerland. They were very much delighted with the Dolomites, and they were struck by the fact that a road round Lake Garda is pierced with 72 tunnels in an area of 30 miles. On their return from the Continent Mr and Mrs Stephens bought a car, and in this they have travelled through the greater part of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. They went to Glasgow for the exhibition. The quaint little fishing villages of Devonshire and Cornwall appealed greatly to them. The return journey to New Zealand will be taken next month via New York, and at Vancouver they will connect with the Aorangi for Auckland.
The Women's Committee of the National Party for Dunedin West held an enjoyable dance in the Art Society rooms on Saturday night. Rainbow decorations brightened the hall and novelty prizes were awarded for the various competitions, Mr T. K. S. Sidey spoke a few words during the evening. Among those present were Mr and Mrs T. K.
