PERSONAL AND SOCIAL
A special meeting of the Mosgiel branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held on Saturday last, Mrs Graham, president, occupying the chair. Mrs Brown (Dunedin) gave a most inspiring talk on “ Temperance.” Items were contributed by Mrs Orr, of Dunedin (humorous recitations), and Mrs McMillan (vocal solos).
A large gathering of members and friends assembled in the cosy lounge of the Y.W.C.A.—beautifully decorated with spring blooms—to enjoy the usual monthly party. After welcoming the guests, Miss Reid asked all present to stand for a few minutes in silence as a mark of respect to one of their committee members (Miss Double), whose death occurred recently. Miss Double had endeared herself to all who knew her, and had been a valuable member during her term of office. The first item on the programme which followed was a competition arranged by Miss Busby entitled " A place name.” Charades by . Misses Pearce, Kerr, Cairney, Busby, and Moragg were most entertaining. Other items were a bracket of songs by Miss Ledgerwood, with Miss MeAra as acompanist; two recitations, Miss Thompson; and a short historic play by members wearing the costumes of the period—“ Catherine Parr.” The cast was as follows: Catherine. Miss Connie Borland; Henry, Miss Margaret Hogg; page, Miss Joyce McDougall. The final item was most amusing. Each of those taking part was provided with a large sheet of paper, from which she was asked to make an animal Miss Jean Craw ley acted as judge, and somd clever work was exhibited. After supper and dancing a happy evening was concluded with the singing of “ Auld Lang Syne.”
