WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST ROUND PLAYED MISS V. FLEMING IN FORM iPer United Press Association! NEW PLYMOUTH. Oct. 14. Playing conditions were more difficult to-day when the first round of the women’s national championship was decided. There were no sensations in the results, but a feature was the fact that five of the eight games were decided on the final green. The weather was overcast at first and then light rain made the greens tricky. By mid-day, however, the sun was shining and conditions were much improved. Results:— Mrs D. Wilson (Hutt) beat Mrs J. M. Wilson (Auckland), 2 and 1. Miss S Collins (Wellington) beat Mrs H. E. Newton (Wanganui), 1 up. Mrs C. Williams (New Plymouth! beat Miss I. Seifert (Manawatu), 2 up. Mrs M. H. Schroff (Titirangi) beat Mrs F. M. Hanson (Hutt), 6 and 4. Miss O. Smith (Napier) beat Mrs R. C. Cook (Wanganui), 1 up. Miss V. Fleming (Christchurch) beat Mrs Coll is Brown (Wanganui), 4 and 3. Miss J. Cliff (New Plymouth) beat Miss C. Holmes (Methven), 5 and 4. Miss J. Duncan (Wanganui) beat Miss White-Parsons (Christchurch). 1 up. Mrs A. M. Slater (Hutt) beat Miss O. Ormond (Napier), 1 up. Miss C. Smith (Invercargill) beat Miss D. Stout (Wellington). 5 and 3. GAMES DESCRIBED Mrs J. N. Wilson (Auckland) gave her seeded namesake, Mrs D. Wilson tHutt), a severe fright in a great game and was beaten over the final stages after establishing an early lead. The game was square at the turn, but the Hutt player took three holes in a row and, though the Aucklander reduced this to lie dormie two, Mrs D. Wilson halved the next to take the game. Miss Fleming (Christchurch) was given a great fight over the first 10 holes by Mrs Collis Brown (Wanganui), six holes being halved in par figures. Miss Fleming turned two up and then played brilliant golf to go on for an easy win, which enhanced her chances for the title Mrs Williams (New Plymouth) played some of the best golf of the day and accounted for Miss heifert (Manawatu) two up. Mrs Wilhamss approach shots were perfect and his gave her superiority. Miss Collins (Wellington) baa to stave off a challenge from Mrs Newton (Wanganui) after lying dorrme two and one. . ... A 28-foot putt by Miss smith (Napier) provided an unexpected climax in her match with Mrs Cook (Wanganui), the former winning one up. The game was patchy with the putting weak. , ... Mrs Cliff (New Plymouth) and Miss Holmes (Methven) gave a fair exhibition. Mrs Cliff, being the stronger won 5 and 4. Her knowledge of the course was a big factor in her win Former Champion Defeated The champion of two years ago, Miss White-Parsons (Christchurch) was defeated on the eighteenth green by Miss Duncan (Wanganui) after a steady game. Miss Duncan, who sunk a lafoot putt to take the game.. snowed great improvement in her putting compared with her game yesterday. Miss Smith (Invercargill) had little opposition from Mrs Stout (Wellington), who was well off her usual game. Miss Smith was consistent from the tee and on the green and a splendid recovery for a bogey four gave her the game on the fifteenth green. A very even contest between Miss Slater (Hutt) and Miss Ormond (Napier) was closed at the eighteenth when Miss Slater sunk a medium putt for a win. Both played steady golf. After being 4 up at the tun. Mrs Schroff (Titirangi) comfortably defeated Mrs Hanson (Hutt). From the outset the issue was never in doubt. Mrs Hanson was not able to match her opponent. Course Record Equalled

Miss Fleming, who played the most impressive golf of the championship matches in the morning, equalled the course record in the afternoon. She had a good chance of breaking the record after a long drive and second ai the last hole, but her weak approach left her on the lower terrace of the green and she took three putts, missing a four-footer for the record On the day’s play she appears to be a strong contender for the championship title. Her card read-out. 4. 5. 3,6, 4. 44. 5. 3—38: in. 5. 4. 3. 6. 4. 5. 4. 5. 6—42 80. Mrs Fullerton-Smith (Marton) returned a card of 81 in the Coronation Medal round, spoiling an otherwise steady round by driving out of bounds at the eleventh. The only other similar score was put up by Mrs D. Crombie (Wellington), whose only lapse was the three putts she took on the seventeenth. Coronation Medal The Coronation Medal was won by Mrs C. J. E. Smith (New Plymouth) on a count back from her club mate, Mrs I. Keith. Miss Fleming won the trophy for the best gross score.
