WARRANT FOR SHOWMAN
"WALL OF DEATH” ACT (From Our Own Correspondent) (By Air Mail) LONDON, Sept. 19. The Kingston-on-Thames magistrate yesterday issued a warrant for the arrest of Alfred John North, a showman, who did not appear in answer to two summonses alleging that a monkey was cruelly ill-treated at Cobhatn. Surrey. It was stated that North was travelling about the country. It was alleged that North ran a performance known as “The Wall of Death," which was given at a fair at Cobham on July 13 and 14. The monkey was placed in a seat of a small motor car. which was then started inside a circular bowl 25 yards !u circumference. As the car’s speed Increased It ascended the walls until it was circling at a considerable altitude. The monkey was kept in the seat by centrifugal force. Prosecuting for the R.S.P.C.A., Mr Gordon Jones said it was alleged that the monkey was sick and terrified. It lesisted being put into the car, and apparently screamed during the whole performance. The audience rose and protested.
“This performance has been given with lions, and now, apparently, monkeys are used," added Mr Jones.
