THE CHRISTMAS ANNUALS

SCENIC WONDERS OF THE SOUTH The beauty of the New Zealand scene lends itself, in many of its spectacular and breathless aspects, to illumination through the ejre of the camera, and the Otago Daily Times and Witness Annual carries eloquent testimony to the effectiveness of photography m depicting. the Do minion’s scenic assets The 1 Island here receives the due which it is sometimes complained, tends to be withheld from its incomparable natural attractions through the inadequacy of passenger liner callings Every phase of the south s heritage of fiord, mountain, river, harbour, and plain is shown in impressive illustrations. The glaciers of the alpine regions, the placid cold lakes of Otago, the park-like forest formations of the Hollyford, are all given pictorial file. In addition, this issue pays special attention to the towns of the south and the port and city of Dunedin—a feature of no less interest to friends overseas, perhaps, than the natural wonders and tourist resorts of the Dominion. The air views of Dunedin and the harboui are especially fine, and allow a bird seye glimpse of Dunedin’s environs which even residents will find unfamiliar. The issue contains two colour supplements from water colours of Wanaka and Arrowtown. and a fullcolour cover of pleasing design.

New Zealand Illustrated Issued by the Christchurch Press Company, has as supplement this year a reproduction in colour of Maori war canoes in the Waikato River on the occasion of a visit by the Governor-General. The charm of Christchurch receives excellent treatment in a number of photographic plates, dealing variously both with the city itself and its surrounding parks and adjacent beaches. A particularly interesting feature arc several air views of Lyttelton Harbour and the Marlborough Sounds, m which the strange configuration of the land is emphasised in relief against the plane of the sea. Scenes in the Alps, in Otago beauty spots, and a few industrial glimpses, principally of the hop-growing industry, are reproduced.
