BASKETBALL

DOMINION TOURNAMENT CONTINUED RAIN INTERRUPTS PLAY (Per United Press Association) TIMARU, Sept. 2. Rain prevented early play at the Dominion basketball tournament at Timaru this morning. Three games were played on an under-sized indoor court, where the conditions and light were not good. Later conditions cleared and a late start was made at Caroline Bay. A gusty wind militated against accurate shooting. Cold, showery weather prevailed, but the games proceeded with the courts slippery. The first A Grade game of the day saw Southland defeat Hawke's Bay by one goal, which was scored after the call of time. This was the second occasion during the tournament on which Hawke's Bay has lost a game after time was called. Rain fell during the game, the players having to seek shelter, and the courts had to be swept before play was recommenced. Better combination in the concluding stages decided the issue in favour of Southland. Considering the conditions, the game between Wellington and Canterbury was a splendid one. Both teams threw the ball about freely, despite the wet court, and the scoring fluctuated in a manner which invested the match with a great deal of interest. Canterbury was one down a minute before time, but managed to draw level just before the bell sounded. South Canterbury continued its winning way by defeating Wairarapa 14—7. Southland Minor scored two good wins, and is now one point behind South Canterbury. Both have played the same number of games, but Southland had a draw. In the Third Grade Bush has now had six wins in six games. West Coast is next with 10 points, and Wanganui has nine, but they have played one game less than the leaders. The following were the results:— FIRST GRADE Wellington 11, Canterbury 11. Southland 14, Hawke's Bay 13. Otago 12, Auckland 7. SECOND GRADE Southland Minor 16, Waikato 14. Ashburton 15.
