Kupchik wins an old-fashioned " Buy Lopez." In mid-game complications each player pursued an advantage on opposite wings. While Dake was winning material on the Q side, Kupchik sacrificed on the K side, and developed an irresistible attack:— " Ruy Lopez." White. Black. Kupchik. Dake. 1. P to K 4 P to K 4 2. Wellington 8J with one game yet to be decided. This is the second occasion on which Otago has held the trophy, having registered their fust win last season. It is hoped to be able to give the complete results in next week s column. PROBLEM No. 643 Unfortunately there is a " cook " in this problem, B to K 7, as well as the intended key move, R to Q 4, solving the problem in two moves. Those who have sent in either of these keys have been credited with correct solutions. NOTE Erich Ellskases, of Austria, was the winner of the Noordwijk (Holland) tournament, with 7J to IJ. Here are the other scores: Keres, 6J-2i; Pirc, SJ-3i; Euwe, 5-4; Bogoljubow, 41-44; Landau, 4J-4J; Thomas, 4-5; Schmidt, Spielmann, and Tartakower, each 2J-6J. Noteworthy is Dr Euwe, who lost to Keres and was out of form.
