Rugby Football An achievement which is reputed to be unprecedented in the history of Rugby football in Eastern Southland was performed by the Mataura Club in annexing all four grades in the district competitions. Suitably to honour the Second, Third, and Fourth Grade teams on their success a complimentary social was arranged by the club for the players. A. short toast list was honoured, and during the proceedings the president of the Eastern Southland Rugbv Football Sub-union, Mr J. W. Aitken, presented the Allan Ritchie Memorial Shield, the Ensign Cup. and the Wingham Cup to the captains of the respective grades. The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Eastern Southland Rugby Football Sub-union was presided over by Mr J. W. Aitken. The secretary of the South Otago Subunion wrote stating that it seemed that a suitable date could not be found for the annual Eastern-South Otago match and suggesting that they should forgo the game for this season. The letter also suggested that Eastern should travel to Balclutha next season, otherwise South Otafo would have to travel for every match.—The letter was received, and it was- pointed out that it was now too late to do anything about a match this season. The question of two Gore firms which ha J arranged a match without advising the sub-union was discussed, and it was decided to write to the firms pointing out that players who were affiliated with the sub-union had been fielded without permission being obtained. The Pioneer Club was granted permission to play a match at Gore against a team from Ettrick.
