Mrs A. C. Stephens will return on Monday from Warrington. ¥ ¥ ¥ Mr and Mrs H. F. Hall have left for the north to attend the wedding of their son, Mr H. J. B. Hall. ¥ ¥ ¥ Miss Biddy Laing will leave on Tuesday for Auckland, where she will be the guest for some weeks of her aunt, Miss Laing. ¥ ¥ ¥ Mrs W. Laidlaw gave a two-table bridge party at her home in Pitt street last evening in honour of Mrs Geoffrey Denniston, of Wanganui. v ¥ ¥ ¥ Foot treatment need not be painful. Phone 11-937.—Advt. ¥ ¥ * Mrs Russell Ritchie left yesterday on a visit to Mrs George Cossens, of Timaru, and will later stay with her daughter, Mrs Derrick Orbell, at Tekapo, ¥ ¥ ¥ Dr and Mrs A. T. McCaw, of Invercargill, who have been visiting Christchurch for the New Zealand annual meeting of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, are spending the week-end with Miss McCaw at “ Islington,” Mosgiel. Mrs Malcolm McAdam, of Grove Bush, Southland, is also staying with Miss McCaw. ¥ ¥ ¥ An enjoyable evening was spent at “Avalon,” the residence of Mrs J. C. McGeorge, on Wednesday last, when Miss Noel McGeorge entertained a number of friends at “Monopoly." The drawing room was tastefully decorated with Australian wattle and spring flowers. Those present were Misses Helen and Enid Paterson, Billie Mitchell, Nancie Evans, and Penelope Coombs, and Messrs Ralph Paterson. Ivan Fitchett, W. Evans, and D. and E. McGeorge. v ¥ ¥ ¥ Professor Alexander Findlay, of the University .of Aberdeen, who will arrive here on Thursday next in the course of a visit to New Zealand, is accompanied by his wife, a daughter of Mr Herbert de Rougement. of Lloyds. Professor and Mrs Findlay will locally be the guests of Professor and Mrs Soper, of St. Leonards. On their return voyage to Scotland they hope to visit Basra, where one of their sons is stationed. ¥ ¥ ¥ The monthly meeting of the St. Clair branch of the League of Mothers was held on Thursday last, Mrs E. M. Doig presiding. Miss McDougall gave an interesting paper on the life and work of Katherine Mansfield, dealing particularly with the charm and subtle suggestiveness of her short stories, to illustrate which Mrs E. J. Anderson read an extract from “ The Doll’s House ” and Mrs P. H. Jones and Mrs Benton an extract each from "At the Bay.” Mrs Robson sang two songs (both by New Zealand composers), which were much appreciated.
