BADMINTON
NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS HIGH STANDARD MAINTAINED (Per United Press Association) HAMILTON, Sept. 2. The standard of play in the New Zealand badminton championships, continued last night in the Bledisloe Hall, was the highest yet seen at any tournament, and there were many exciting games. In the A Grade the holder, Hawksworth, was in fine form. He played brilliantly to beat J. D. Lewis (Auckland), smashing powerfully and producing every stroke cleanly Hawksworth must enter the final. JR. Lewis (Waikato and Auckland title-holder) defeated Vestey (Hawke's Bay) and Sheerin (Manawatu), and now meets H. H. Fow. the holder in 1934. in the semi-final. Fow is in his best form for several years, but Lewis is also playing fine badminton He defeated Fow in the Auckland championships recently. Fow played excellently to beat Pearce (Wellington). In the women's section Miss Edmonson eliminated Mrs P. Hawksworth from the Singles. Miss Kerr, the holder. Miss Fleming (Wellington) and Miss Ramsay (Auckland) are the other semi-finalists. The standard in this section has also been very high, and there is little between many of the competitors. The Hamilton pair, H. H. Fow and R. Fear, previous holders, were eliminated by Whale and Anderson (Auckland). Pearce and Hawksworth. who are showing fine combination, are still in the Doubles, while the Lewis brothers are also in this section.
Hawksworth and Mrs Hawksworth. the holders of the Mixed Doubles, won their match last night, and in the second round Pearce and Miss Kerr eliminated Fow 1 and Mrs Fow.
