TRANSPORT POLICY
OUTLINE BY MINISTER ELIMINATION OF UNDUE COMPETITION 'From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON. Sept. 2.
"It is not the intention of the Government to interfere with any services that are not in direct competition with the railways." said the Minister of Transport (Mr R. Semple) when replying to questions on transport policy during consideration of the estimates of the department in the House of Representatives this evening. "We have great investments in transport," the Minister said. " There is £55,000,000 invested in the railways, £66,000,000 in motor vehicles and £81,000,000 in roads, and we have to consider how best to protect that invested capita] both on the roads and on the railways. If a licensing authority thinks that a service is not necessary, that service does not get a licence. We had to cancel some out because of overlapping, foul competition, long hours and low wages. " We have to consider creating a transport service that will live and let live," Mr Semple concluded, " and we are trying to cut out undue competition."
