FIRE AT SEA
OUTBREAK ON CITY OF WINCHESTER NO SERIOUS DAMAGE CAUSED (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 1. Discovered early one morning last week, an outbreak of fire spread through the saloon and adjacent alleyways of the British steamer City of Winchester, of 7120 tons, when in mid-Pacific on her voyage from New York to Auckland. Although no serious damage was caused to the ship, the extent of the burnt and blistered woodwork indicated the possible danger in which she might have been placed. She. was a week’s steaming from Auckland when about 4 o’clock on the morning of August 23 portions of the quarters amidships were found to be ablaze. The fire had taken a good hold, but instant action with the use of chemical extinguishers and hoses resulted in the outbreak being extinguished without great difficulty. The cause of the fire, which apparently broke out in the saloon in which the ship’s officers mess, has not been definitely ascertained.
