SOUTH CAROLINA CONTEST SENATOR SMITHS SUCCESS (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) NEW YORK, Aug. 31. A Columbia (South Carolina) message states that Senator Ellisond Smith, who was the target of the Roosevelt “ purge,” defeated Governor Olind Johnston in the South Carolina primary. Mr Johnston was endorsed by President Roosevelt. In San Francisco Senator William Gibbs McAdoo, who is supported by the President, is running behind Mr Sheridan Downey, the champion of the “ham and eggs” 30-dollar weekly pension scheme for every Californian over 50 years of age.
