NEW PRINTING OFFICE
BIG EXPENDITURE BY STATE ANTAGONISM IN AUCKLAND (Special xo Daily Times) AUCKLAND, Sept. 1. “The figure is not quite astronomical, but it is almost so,” said Mr A. G. Lunn, when drawing attention at a council meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce to a report from Wellington concerning the new Government Printing Office to be built at a cost of £580,000, “ This expenditure comes at a time when taxation is abnormal, and the problem of the business community is a serious one,” Mr Lunn continued. “ The Government, however, which is looking for economic relief, proposes to spend this money while there are printing firms with which arrangements could be made to take over some of the work. The Government is to erect a building taking up double the space of its present printing office, and, if extra machinery to correspond with the space is installed, then the office must impinge upon private effort. We should make our views known to the Government through the Associated Chambers of Commerce.” Mr Lunn moved that the attention of the Associated Chambers should be drawn to the matter, and that it should be requested to take the question up with the authorities. The motion was carried.
