LAWN TENNIS

NORTH-EAST VALLEY CLUB The annual meeting of the NorthEast Valley Lawn Tennis Club was held last Tuesday evening in the club’s pavilion, when a good muster of members was present. In the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr J. Leggett, Mr E. S. Swete occupied the chair. Moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, Mr Swete said that the result of the year’s'workings financially could be considered satisfactory. Six teams had been entered in the Otago Association’s competitions, and had put up reasonably good performances without winning any shields. He drew attention to the necessity for raising funds for the renewal of one court during the new seamn. The motion was seconded by Mr G. H. Jolly, who reviewed the receipts and expenditure of the past year, and who (as club treasurer) answered several questions regarding the balance sheet. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr Jonathon Rhodes; president, Mr D. S. Munro; vice-presidents, Mr E. S. Swete and Mr J. J. Coulter; secretary, Miss E. E. Marshall; treasurer, Mr G. Fraser; club captain, Mr K. Munro; auditor, Mr G. H. Jolly; committee— Misses I. Ross and N. Brown, Messrs L. R. Facer and G, H. Jolly: joint selectors. Mr J. Wallace and Mr K. Munro. Messrs E. S. Sv/ele and G. H. Jolly wore reappointed delegates to the Otago Lawn Tennis Association. The question of teams to be entered was referred to the incoming committee. Opening day was fixed for September 17, to be followed by a combined dance with the St. Clair Club in the Tea Kiosk in the evening. It was decided to accept a five years’ lease of the courts and pavilion from the Bowling Club at the same rental. The question of the minimum dress for men players was discussed, and it was decided that the club would follow the lead given by the association and state the minimum dress to be trousers and shirt. A resolution was carried congratulating Dr J. Fulton on his election as president of the Hew Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, and it was decided to send him a letter accordingly.
