SKI COUNCIL

FEDERATED MOUNTAIN CLUBS ANNUAL MEETING (Per United Press Association) THE HERMITAGE, Aug. 31. The annual meeting of the Ski Council of the Federated Mountain Clubs was held last evening, Mr F. H. Drewitt presiding. The following clubs were represented: Stratford Mountain Club, Mount Egmont Alpine Club, Otago Ski Club, Ruapehu Ski Club, Taranaki Alpine Club, Tasman Ski Club, Aorangi Ski Club, Tararua Tramping Club, Christchurch Ski Club, Canterbury Winter Sports Club, and the Hutt Valley Tramping Club. In the chairman's address, Mr F. H. Drewitt referred to the success of the visit of the American ski-ing team. He said the visit of this team had stimulated ski-ing in New Zealand, and the high standard of skiing shown in.this year's championship was due in a large measure to the visit of this team. The chairman said that applications to allow of the second-class test bein<? ••onducted by one judge and an emergency judge instead of two full judges was approved. The Ski Council was asked to go into the question of having two prominent jumping hills, one at Mount Cook and one at Ruapehu. It was agreed to hold the 3ki championships for 1939 at Mount Ruapehu. The chairman saio that applications for employment as Ski-ing instructors had been received from a number of Australian ski teachers, and he hoped that positions as instructors for these men might be found in the Dominion. The council decided to write various ski clubs to obtain their opinions regarding the employing of one of these men as a permanent ski instructor.

A motion that the existing rules be altered to allow for equal representation of the North and the South Island on the council was defeated on the grounds that this might hinder the selection of the best men available. A motion from the Mount Egmont Alpine Club for the elimination of telemark and jump turns from the third-class ski tests was defeated. The election to the Ski Council resulted as follows:—Messrs F. H. Drewitt (Tasman Ski Club), E. C. A. Ferrier (Christchurch Ski Club), R. B. Gray (Tararua Tramping Club), B. E. Murphy (Ruapehu Ski Club), and H. Snowden (Ruapehu Ski Club). On account of intermittent falls of snow the championship events have been altered to suit the conditions, and the ski jump will be held late this afternoon, if the weather is suitable and the downhill race on Thursday morning.
