CATHOLIC ACTION
THE MOVEMENT IN ITALY PACT WITH FASCISTS ROME, Aug. 22 An agreement just reached between the Fascist Party and the Vatican is regarded by Italian leaders as a triumph for Signor Mussolini. It is of tremendous importance, also, to the internal situation of Italy. The quarrel with the Vatican flared up when the Fascists recently adopted. the racial theories of the German Nazis. In strong condemnation of the Fascists' move, the Pope asked " how Italy found the need so disgracefully to imitate Germany," The Pope's speech was banned from Italian newspapers. An official statement issued in Rome now states: "The secretaiygeneral of the Fascist Party, Signor Starace, had a meeting with the president of the Central Bureau of the Catholic Action movement. " They examined the problem of the relations between the party and the movement. It was decided to observe the clauses in the agreement reached in this respect in September, 1931." The statement then reproduces the text of the 1931 agreement, a significant passage being: " The Catholic Action movement does not deal in political activities of any kind. It is entirely devoted to educational and recreative activities with religious aims."
