INDIAN TOUR CONCLUDED VISITORS WIN THIRD TEST ; THREE GOALS TO ONE ,ir (Per United Press Association) • AUCKLAND, Aug. 27. - In the third test at Eden Park, the Manavadar Indian hockey team beat New Zealand, by three to one after a fairly even struggle. The game was played in continuous rain on a sodden ground, and many movements were marred by the treacherous conditions. The attendance was only about 4000. Play was even in the first half, and, although the Indian forwards showed greater skill and understand ing and looked the more dangerous. New Zealand gained several penalty corners, Fernandez lost a penalty bully against Jones, but the first score was not until close on half time. Shortly after the resumption, Roughton lost a penalty bully against Gurnarain Singh. The Indians pressed hard, Hart stopping well. New Zealand returned for Watson to score from a penalty corner. Manavadar then scored twice more, once from a penalty corner The chief feature of the second half was the outstanding work done by Hart, the New Zealand goal-keeper A much stronger forward line was fielded by Manavadar than against Auckland. Abdul Latif showed brilliant stick work and ball control under the most unfavourable conditions, and was the leader of the forwards. The wings, Shahabuddin %nd Fernandez, both gave excellent displays of speed and cleverness. All the halves played well, with Shahnoor Khan outstanding. Hussain could not play, but Fasahat Yar Khan, who was in his place, was exceptionally sound.

Apart from Hart, there were few outstanding players for New Zealand. A fine game was played by Jones, right full-back, and Loader and Watson were the best of 'be halves. Lack of combination among the forwards spoiled many attacks Houghton and Browne went well, but the Deposing defence was too good to allow the forwards much freedom. The Indians were still superior in stickwork, but New Zealand adapted itself well to the visitors’ type of game. Play for the first 15 minutes was evenly distributed, the Indians showing slight superiority only in accuracy of stickwork. A penalty bully to India was saved by Jones, who beat Feroze Khan for the ball India opened the scoring following a clever forward movement which Abdul Latif finished off with a brilliant individual run to land the ball in the net. New Zealand forced the play after this by fast forward sorties, but Gurnarain Singh proved the stumbling block. India replied with a concerted movement which found Abdul Latif bearing down on Hart, who saved, and a minute later

Feroze Khan shot to the net but sticks nullified the score. At half time the score was India 1, New Zealand 0. Two minutes after the restarting New Zealand penetrated India’s defence, and when awarded a penalty bully Gurnarain Singh got the better of Roughton and cleared. New Zealand continued on the aggressive, the half-backs following close behind the forwards, but only twice were they in a scoring position. A long pass by Gurnarain Singh was taken up by Abdul Latif, who ran right in on Hart, the New Zealand goalie,- who cleared. After 17 minutes’ play, New Zealand forced a penalty corner, from which Watson equalised. India ' retaliated strongly, and forced a comer. Completely misunderstanding the referee’s whistle, the New Zealand team stood on the line while Gunarain Singh slammed the ball into the net. In the closing stages India held the advantage. Hart on several occasions saved brilliantly. Two minutes from time Fernandez put the issue beyond doubt by scoring from a bright individual effort. A hard game ended:— India 3 goals New Zealand . ■ 1 goal LOCAL GAMES Senior Seven-a-side Only three teams took part in the Otago Hockey Association’s senior seven-a-side tournament, which was held at Tonga Park on Saturday.
