FAMOUS PHILATELIST

Sir Edward Bacon, curator of the King’s philatelic collections at Buckingham Palace, died recently at the age of 77. For more than 50 years Sir Edward was prominent in the British stamp world. He was chairman of the Expert Committee of the Royal Philatelic Society. Sir Edward, who received his knighthood in 1932. was the eldest son of the late Edward Bacon, of Ilford Hall, Ilford, Essex. He undertook and completed the arrangement of the Tapling collection of stamps in the British Museum. From 1917 to 1923 he was president of the Royal Philatelic Society. In 1885 Sir Edward married Alice Atkins, daughter of the late Charles Cadywold Atkins, of Norfolk. She died in 1902. A son and daughter survive. Among the works of Sir Edward are “The LineEngraved Postage Stamps of Great Britain ” and “ Catalogue of the Philatelic Library of the Earl of Crawford.”
