FISHING INDUSTRY
MARKETING AND OTHER PROBLEMS CONFERENCE IN WELLINGTON STATEMENT BY MINISTER (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Aug. 14. A definite move is to be made by all sections of the fishing industry toward implementing the recommendations made last year by the Sea Fisheries Investigation Committee concerning marketing and its attendant problems. An announcement on these lines was made yesterday by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr D. G. Sullivan). The Minister stated that a conference of fish exporters and fishermen’s representatives had been held in Wellington during the week. It had adopted certain proposals which were to be considered and reported upon by three advisory committees set up for that purpose in Auckland, Wellington, and the South Island. Reports, as they applied to the districts concerned, would be collated by the Central Committee in Wellington, which would then give further consideration to the formation of a provisional plan for improving the organisation of the industry as a whole.
“The committees will be representative of all sections of the industry,” Mr Sullivan continued, “ and will include fishermen, wholesalers, exporters, and retailers. The interests of all sections will be safeguarded, as also will be the interests of the consuming public in the matter of quality, price, and service.” The Minister added that the dispute at Bluff and Stewart Island between the merchants and the fishermen had been settled, but the terms of settlement were still subject to possible readjustments dating back to August 1 and contingent upon an investigation of the position by departmental officers.
