PARTITION PLAN

THE PALESTINE PROBLEM BRITAIN'S POLICY OUTLINED DISORDERS CONTINUE ‘British Official Wireless) . (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) RUGBY, Aug. 13. The Secretary for the Colonies (Mr Malcolm Macdonald), discussing his Palestine visit in a broadcast address, said Britain accepted the partition policy recommended by the recent Royal Commission as the best and most hopeful solution, but final decisions could not be taken until the technical commission at present inquiring into details of partition had finished its labours, which would still take several weeks. After that decisions must be reached with the least possible delay.

The authorities in the meantime had the hard task of restoring order, Mr MacDonald said. Britain would administer her trust on a basis of justice between the Jews, who were building at long last theii national home, and the Arabs, whose title in the land of their birth was indisputable. Sometimes the powers of conciliation appeared puny. They seemed easily overthrown by that violence and hale which could also be let loose. But there was a spirit that brooded over Palestine, and with God’s help peace would be restored in the Holy Land. Attacks on Jews The Colonial Office announces that two Jews yesterday were shot at and seriously wounded, one in Jaffa and the other in Haifa, where a Jewish truck was set on fire and the driver injured Early this morning a Jew was shot dead near the Jaffa gate, Jerusalem. Yesterday a Jewish public works foreman was kidnapped from the Haifa-Tel-Aviv road.

A message from Jerusalem reports that five rebels were killed at Nablus in a conflict with the Irish Guards.
