BASKETBALL
SOUTHLAND BEATS OTAGO SIXTEEN GOALS TO SEVEN (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Aug. 13, The representative basketball match between Southland and Otago to-day was won by Southland by 16 goals to 7, Southland thus retaining the Southland Cup. The game was controlled from Southland’s active and enterprising centre play, backed up by accurate and frequently brilliant defence work, particularly on the part of Joyce Kelly, while the forwards combined well and scored accurately and attractively. Otago’s forward line was weakened by the absence of its most accurate shot, and its shots at goal lacked confidence. It was in the centre, however, that Southland had its most definite advantage. The enterprising play of V. Frazer and M. Stapleton, following the example of that experienced player, E. Shepherd was a feature of the game. Otago did not work up the combination necessary to rapid clearances in this section, and while its individual play was fast and enterprising, the handling and passing were so erratic as to nullify the hard work of the defence.
Southland’s forwards played well together, and supported the centre by coming out quickly. Otago's defence, particularly that of D. Thomson and A. Reidy, wag" responsible for some brilliant interceptive play, but did not receive enough support from the centre. The teams were:—
Otago.—Forwards—M, Gillies, L. Guthrie, J. Clayton: centres—N. Thompson, J. Leckie, M. Sinclair (captain); defences—A. Reidy, D. Thomson, C. Batchelor. Southland.—Forwards—M. McGrath, R. Henderson, L. Tinker; centres—E. Shepherd, V. Frazer, M. Stapleton; defenders—J. Kelly (captain). B. Ingram, E. Crowe.
JUNIOR MATCH ,
The junior basketball match between Otago and Southland was won by Otago by eight goals to seven. Otago had the bettor of the game in the first spell, chiefly as the result of its active defence, which effectively spoiled many of Southland’s chances at goal. In the second half, Southland’s centres worked like Trojans, and had many brisk exchanges with Otago’s defence, which, after a short slump in the middle of the spell, eventually rallied and effectively blocked Southland’s forwards from securing the equalising goal.
