CHAMPIONSHIPS CONCLUDED ABBOTT WINS MEN’S SINGLES WOMEN’S EVENT TO MISS KERR SURPRISES IN DOUBLES After almost a week of strenuous badminton, the Otago championships were brought to a successful conclusion on Saturday night, when a fair attendance of spectators in Fuller Hall witnessed some exciting encounters between the semi-finalists in the A and B Grade Championship events. The tournament —the fifth to be conducted by the Otago Association —marked another forward step in the progress of the sport in Dunedin, and the competitors have every reason to feel gratified at the remarks made by the president of the association. Mr J. H. Meek, who, prior to presenting the trophies to the various winners, congratulated the players on the excellent standard of their play. Throughout the progress of the tournament the individual players maintained a surprisingly high standard, and on the final night some outstanding performances were recorded. Exciting Doubles Play There were two surprise victories, the first be ng provided by Misses K. Angell and J. Emslie, who defeated

Misses M. Kerr and J. Hay in the final of the A Grade Women’s Doubles Championship. The performance was a very meritorious one, for, prior to the championship fixture, the winners were soundly beaten by the same opponents in the final of the Women’s Doubles Handicap. Some lively exchanges marked the onening stages of the championship fixture, but Misses Hay and Kerr (Dunedin) were the first to establish a lead. The Dunedin Twenty girls drew level at 10 all. however. and setting was necessary. Misses Angell and Emslie winning by a threepoint margin. After being down 10—3 in .the second set, the Twenty players overhauled their opponents and drew level at 10 all again, eventually winning 13—10. United Players’ Success The other highlight of the fixture was the defeat of G. R. Dickinson and J. R. Laidlaw (Dunedin) in the Men’s A Grade Doubles Championship by L. Swallow and J. Steven, the United Club players, who have been remarkably consistent in all the interclub matches this season, Dickinson and Laidlaw, who held the title for this event in 1936, were well beaten by their younger opponents. The match, however, was productive of some of the best and most strenuous badminton seen duripg the tournament. Swallow and Laidlaw were at the top of their form and engaged in several exciting duels during a three-set encounter. * Abbott Beats Swan

W. Abbott, of the Dunedin Twenty Club and holder of the Men’s Singles title in 1936, staved off a strong challenge from his club-mate, J. Swan, to gain the honours, but through questioning the decision of the umpire (Mr I. Penrose), who ruled that a point be played for again, as it was doubtful whether the shuttle went inside the court or out, he could have been disqualified. The incident arose at the commencement of the third set. neither player having opened his score. Abbott appealed for a different umpire after the incident, but the match proceeded under the same control. In the first set he was definitely on top and secured several points in a row by employing a devastating smash. Swan altered his tactics in the second set and played numerous short strokes which forced the champion into making several mistakes. Swan took the set 15—8, The final set was in favour of Abbott all the way. Swan kept returning high lobs to his opponent, who released a battery of smashes and romped home an easy winner, the score being 15—5. Miss Kerr’s Victory . Against the formidable Miss Kerr, who annexed the Women’s Singles title for the third year in succession. Miss O. Erridge, of the Balmacewen Club made a brave showing. From the outset, however, it was apparent that she could not maintain the pace set by the youthful New Zealand champion. who played a vigorous game throughout and smashed with marked severity! Miss Erridge secured three points in the first set before acknowledging defeat, but in the second she played with increased confidence and made the champion work harder for her victory Some of her cross-court drop shots were neatly executed, and brought her well-deserved applause from the spectators. The score in the second set was 15 —5 Mixed Doubles Final A close and exciting tussle eventuated between G. R. Dickinson and Miss M. Kerr (Dunedin) and W Abbott and Miss L. Samson (Dunedin Twenty) to decide the issue in the Mixed Doubles A Grade Championship All four players were on their toes from the start, and each side alternately forged to the front. The Dunedin pair took the first set 15—13, Dickinson and Abbott playing some spectacular shots from the back line, while Miss Samson was particularly agile at the net and bustled her adversary on many occasions. A keen and tense struggle, with each side striving for supremacy was witnessed in the second set, but halfway through was obvious that the strain was beginning to tell on the players, and foolish mistakes were not uncommon, The score reached 13—all when setting (5 up) was played, Dickinson and Miss Kerr eventually winning 18—13. B Grade and Handicap Keen competition was seen in the finals of the various B Grade Championship events, in which several of the younger competitors were prominent. F. Esquilant and H. Dawe came through a large field to win the Men’s Doubles Championship and Misses E Hughes and J. Leith, also of the Twenty Club registered fine performances to win the women’s title. The Mixed Doubles were won by J. Macassey and Miss M. Crow of the Dunedin Club. In most of the handicap events the winners secured clear-cut victories, but all the matches were keenly contested. G. Lemin and Miss K, Angell, of the Dunedin Twenty Club, won the Men’s and Women’s Singles respectively, while the Mixed Doubles went to S. Gourley (Camac) and Miss J. Leith (Dunedih Twenty).

PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES At the conclusion of the tournament the president of the Otago Badminton Association (Mr J. H. Meek) presented the various trophies to the winners. He also paid a tribute to the valuable work of Miss L H. Fraser and Mr E. D. Duthie, both of whom had played the most important game of all in conducting the tournament through all its stages.
