BAKERS AND PASTRYCOOKS

PROVISIONS OF NEW AWARD HIGHER RATES OF WAGES {Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 12. ; Provision for an increase in wages is made in the new award for bakers and pastrycooks to operate throughout the Northern, Taranaki, Wellington, Canterbury, Westland, Otago and Southland industrial districts. The award was issued in the Arbitration Court by Mr Justice O'Regan to-day. It will take effect from August 22 and will remain in force for two years. There has been no alteration in the weekly hours, daily hours, starting times or penalty rates. Wages have been increased by 5s a week as follows:—Foreman baker or pastrycook, to receive £6 ss; journeyman baker and pastrycook, £5 15s; baker's labourer, £4 15s; packer, £4 15s. A journeyman jobber is to receive not less than £1 2s a day and a labourer jobber not less than 19s, an increase of 2s in each case. Overtime is to be paid at the rate of time and a-half for the first four hours and double time thereafter, with a minimum payment of Is 6d an hour. Junior labourers starting at under 19 years of age are to receive 6d a week increase in the fourth six months, Is 6d in the fifth six months and an increase of 2s 6d a week thereafter. Other juniors receive a slight increase in proportion. Female workers have also received an increase. The annual holiday is to be nine consecutive working days on full pay instead of eight, and the picnic day is cut out. In a memorandum to the award his Honor states that the union asked for a 40-hour week. As it had been decided in 1936 that it was impracticable to carry on the industry in less than 44 hours a week, the matter must be regarded as settled, at any rate until the circumstances could be shown to have altered so that reconsideration was justifiable.
