AGAINST SURREY

AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS FIRST INNINGS TOTAL 297 BAD LIGHT STOPS PLAY (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, Aug. 11. Play in the match between Surrey and Australia was commenced at 2.15. The Oval wicket is notorious for its bad behaviour when sunshine follows rain, consequently it was not surprising that Holmes sent Australia in to bat. The wicket, however, played well. Fingleton, when 9, reached his long-delayed 1000 runs on the tour. The opening batsmen scored 64 before Fingleton was out. Hassett soon followed. Then McCabe and Barnes became associated in a partnership which reached 93 runs. Both batted attractively, and the bowling appeared to be mastered when Barnes called for a short single to which McCabe responded and was run out. With a thunderstorm brewing, the light became bad, and play was stopped for the day at 5.55. The Surrey team is Holmes, Gar-land-Wells, Brooks, Gregory, Fishlock, Squire, Barling, Gover, Parker, Watts, Whitfield. Bradman, Chipperfield, Badcock, and Ward are not playing for Australia. Walker is twelfth man. BARNES BATS ATTRACTIVELY RUN OUT AT 63 LONDON, Aug. 12. (Received Aug. 13, at 2 a.m.) There was bright sunshine for the resumption of play, but the wicket was still soft. Waite made a feeble -troke and was caught at mid-on. Barnes, who was batting attractively, was run out through a misunderstanding with Barnett, who hesitated in the middle of the pitch. Barnes hit five 4's. Barnett, in his first appearance since the Leeds test, showed excellent form. He and White put on 28 before White was bowled. Barnett remained or 55 minutes, when he was out leg before. McCormick spooned up a catch in the covers. O'Reilly hit and mishit with equal confidence, and Fleetwood-Smith's antics kept the small crowd amused till the innings ended after 280 minutes.
