TAIERI PLOUGHING MATCHES
TO THE EDITOR Sir,— l have been wondering if any •f your readers could inform me when the last of the useful and educational ploughing matches took place in the far,-famed Taieri Plains. I remember in the early days fcha< they did take place as I attended a few myself. Why they were discontinued I do not know. I have been told that when modern discs, grain drill, cultivators, etc., came into vogue it did not matter how the land was ploughed as these implements could do what is required. I do not agree with that idea, for I hold that if land Is not properlj ploughed the farmer Is handicapped from the start. I would like any one interested to look up the recent numbers of the New Zealand Farmers' Journal and see what is going on in other places. I would suggest that a meeting of all interested be called at the earliest opportunity to see if something can be done in the Taieri before the season is too far advanced.—l am, etc., Thomas. McMillan. Burnside, August 11.
