BALCLUTHA Borough Council At a special meeting of the Balclutha Borough Council on Thursday night, over which the Deputy Mayor (Cr Copland) presided, four tenders were received for the sanitary contract as follows:—R. F. Cuthbertson, £420, plus weeklv service rate (accepted); R. A. Cleaver, £425; William Miller, £510; D. Lattimore and J. A. Greer, £575. The tender of Byers and Webb was accepted for the supply of 500 yards of gravel at Is 6d per yard. A discussion arose regarding the former decision of the council to cut down the trees sheltering the west side of the sports ground, and it was finally resolved to call for tenders for trimming the trees. Angus McDiarmid's tender was accepted for the removal of timber left over from milling operations at the south end of the embankment. Maori Concert Party A successful concert in aid of the local Swimming Club was given in the. Britannia Theatre on Thursday night by the Karitane Maori concert party, under the leadership of Mrs Te Tau. The theatre was packed. The programme in the main comprised songs, concerted vocal selections, poi dances, hakas and war dances. The performers appeared in Maori costume, with appropriate stage settings, and everything passed off well. Mrs Parata provided the piano accompaniments. Variety was lent to the entertainment by a troupe of acrobats from J. P. Northey's school, Dunedin, whose clever performance was very much appreciated. The members of the troupe were Messrs W. Clark. R. Neuman, J. Durand and Doug. Freeman, the last-named being the leader. At the close of the concert Mr R. W. McGuffog (president of the Swimming Club) thanked the performers from Dunedin and called for cheers, which were heartily given. Afterwards a dance was held in the Dalton Hall, and the visiting performers were entertained at supper before departing for the city. Music for the dance was provided by Mrs Parata and Mr George Laing. Rugby Sub-union A meeting of the Management Committee was held on Thursday night, Mr J. P. Lyall being in the chair. It was decided to write to the Otago Rugby Union asking that a team from the Pirates II should be sent to Balclutha on September 3 to play a South Otago team picked from the second fifteens and senior B's. Clay Pigeon Shooting South Otago Gun Club members did well at the New Zealand Championship meeting held at Leeston and Christchurch. On six out of the seven days' shooting members of the club were "in the money." In the £IOO Open Clay, Bird Handicap, fired at Christchurch, J, Stiven (Paretai) was one of the three who divided the stake, and he also divided in the £IOO Sparrow Handicap at Leeston. Clem Wilson (Tawanui) divided in the £IOO Pigeon Match, and H. Collins (who also belong to the local club) divided in the New Zealand Pigeon Handicap of £2OO. Wilson Elliott, of Balclutha, went very close to winning the Clay Bird Championship of New Zealand. He was beaten by only one bird in the shoot-off, which went to 39 birds. Second place carried with it a cup, an order for a £lO trophy, and a share of the sweepstake money. Elliott also divided in the " first-miss-out" sweep, and in another stake, E. Broad, of Tuatapere (also a member of the South Otago club, divided in a £2OO handicap. W. Telford, of Clinton, shot well at the meeting, although he did not get into the big money. Miniature Rifle Matches Several matches were shot at the Band Hall on Thursday night. In the A match between Balclutha and Port Molyneux Balclutha won by 33 points. Scores were.—Balclutha A: A. At a meeting, of the South Otago Association held on Thursday night it was decided to hold a championship meeting at Balclutha on September 17, to be open to all South Otago clubs. Mr S. D. McDonald gave a prize for the championship. It was further decided to arrange a postal shoot with Rakaia next week. MILTON Motoring Accident A young man named Francis Dowdall a resident of Milton, who is employed at a local garage, was admitted to the local hospital on Wednesday evening suffering from extensive injuries caused through a collision at Waihola between his motor cycle and a motor truck driven by S. J. Casey, of Gore. Dowdall's injuries consist of a fracture of the base of the skull, severe injuries to his right foot, and severe concussion. The truck and motor cycle, which ' were proceeding in opposite directions, were both extensively damaged. Personal Prior to her departure this week to take up a position on the staff of the Chalet Hospital. Dunedin. Miss J. Kitto, of Kiness (Milton), was tendered a social evening by a large number of friends, when best wishes were expressed for her future welfare. Mr J. M. Sherwood, electrician on the staff of the Bruce Woollen Mills during the past 10 years, has secured an appointment with the Union Steam Ship Company, and will leave next Wednesday for Wellington to join the coastal vessel Waiana as ship's electrician. Women's Hockey By its defeat of Bruce A team last Saturday in the South Otago Women's Hockev Association's shield competition. Milton Club's A team became premier in the northern division. The final game to decide the winners of the shield for the current season will be played this afternoon at Balclutha between Milton A and Owaka (winner of the southern division). Departing Railway Officer On the eve of his departure for Morven, where he has been transferred on promot ; on to the position of station master, Mr G. W. Sidon. chief clerk at Milton goods shed, was entertained at a valedictory social by fellow members of the local railway station staff and presented with a pair of blankets as an expression of their goodwill. Mr T. J. Cameron (station master) and several other speakers re-
ferred to the harmonious relations which had always existed between Mr Sidon and fellow workers and expressed best wishes for his future welfare. During his 10 years' residence in Milton Mr Sidon has always taken an "active interest in the welfare of the local Foresters' courts, of which he occupied the position of treasurer. Mr Sidon was guest of honour at a complimentary social evening tendered by fellow Foresters, and was presented with a Bruce travelling rug. Primary Schools' Sports The Toko District High School will be represented by two football and two basketball teams in the South Otago Primary Schools' Sports Association's seven-a-side tournaments, to be held at Balclutha this afternoon.
