COMMUNITY SING
SUCCESSFUL PLUNKET APPEAL One of the most enjoyable as well as one of the most successful community sings was held in the Strand Theatre yesterday. The day was the occasion of the special appeal on behalf of the Plunket Society and there was a crowded house Nurses from the Karitane-Harris Hospital sang a number of songs with topical verses and Sister Helen Liddell sang two solos. Another special treat was the appearance of Miss Ruth Draper, who commented upon the enjoyment to be derived from community sings and how this could be combined with doing good work in charitable causes. She spoke of the reception which she had received in New Zealand and reminded the audience of the necessity of cultivating their own interests in culture since the country's geographical isolation prevented many artists from visiting it to inspire such an interest. Mr James Hogg, president of the local branch of the Plunket Society, thanked the committee for its generous action and. at the conclusion of the sing, Mrs McGeorge. secretary of the branch, and Mrs T Begg. a Dominion vice-president, personally called and thanked the leaders. Messrs H. P Desmoulins. J Himburg and A Pettitt
A large number of gifts and promises have been received by the committee from listeners and until these have been received and disposed of it will not be possible to give an accurate indication of the result of the appeal. Yesterday, however, about £IOO had been received and the committee was hopeful that its object would be achieved.
