NEW LANDING AREA
EMERGENCY PURPOSES REPORTED PURCHASE IN NELSON PROVINCE (Pee United Press Association) MOTUEKA, Aug. 12. A fact not hitherto disclosed is the decision of the Government to establish an emergency landing ground at Long Plain, near Lake Rotoiti, in the Tophouse district, Nelson province. The land for the purpose has been acquired from Mr Alexander McConochie, owner of Lake Station, and comprises about 100 acres of tussock country ideally situated as an emergency landing area. The Motupiko, Buller, and Wairau rivers converge at Tophouse. From the flying point of view, these landmarks will enable aviators to locate the new grounds under the most unfavourable atmospheric conditions. The land has been surveyed, and it is understood that the formation work will be put in hand by the Government as soon as the necessary labour is available.
