THEFT OF CHILD'S GOWN WOMAN SENT TO GAOL (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 2. Arrested yesterday afternoon on a charge of shoplifting in Karangahape road, Hilda Bryant, a married woman, aged 46, admitted in the Police Court to-day having stolen a child's gown valued at 7s sd. The police said she had five previous convictions for this kind of offence. ~ ~ . , Defending counsel said she had yielded to an irresistible impulse. The article was of no use to her, as her granddaughter had died two weeks ago. On the last occasion she was before the court a medical certificate was produced showing that she had suffered from brain fever. The husband, a most respectable man, was prepared to abandon his employment and take her to live in Hie country. Declaring that imprisonment was the only way to deal with such a case, Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., sentenced her to seven days' imprisonment.
