GRAND JURY SYSTEM
DESIRABILITY OF INVESTIGATION QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT (From Oub Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 21. The desirability of investigating the usefulness of the grand jury system in criminal trials is raised by Mr C. H. Burnett (Govt., Tauranga) in a question to the Attorney-general (Mr H, G. R. Mason), of which he gave notice in the House of Representatives today. Mr Burnett is asking if the At-torney-general’s attention has been drawn to a report in the press dealing with Supreme Court proceedings against a prominent Auckland citizen. A no bill was returned by the grand jury after the case in question had been sent forward for trial by an experienced magistrate and after a judge of the Supreme Court of the highest standing had stated: “This case presents Hself to you as a case for a true bill.” . “The report of this case,” said Mr Bumeti, “ and the decision of the grand jury seem to open for immediate consideration by the Legislature the value of our grand jury system under the constitution."
