BIRTH RATE RISE
CHECK TO DECLINE FIGURES FOR SIX YEARS LOW INFANTILE MORTALITY (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON. July 21. The total of 26,014 births during 1937, as revealed in the annual report of the Director-general of Health (Dr M H. Watt) is 1177 in excess of the number for 1936. and substantially above the figures for other recent years. The following table gives an indication of the decline and subsequent increase in the number of births and the birth-rate per 1000 mean population since 1932:
How the death rate has fluctuated in recent years is illustrated in the table below, which also reveals the manner in which the infantile mortality rate has remained at a consistently low figure:—
The rate of still births per 1000 live births since 1932 has been as follows; — 1932, 30.0; 1933, 29.7; 1934, 28.3; 1935. 30.8; 1936, 29.5; 1937, 29.38
