THE PUBLIC DEBT

TO THE EDITOR

Sir, —In his Budget Statement Mr Nash states that Public Debt as at March 31. 1938, was £290,201,342. Of this total, he says, £156,857,106 is domiciled in London. He does not say whether this amount is expressed in sterling or in New Zealand currency. If the former, as no doubt it is, the New Zealand equivalent is £195,286,985. The Public Debt at March 31 last, expressed in New Zealand currency, as it should be, was therefore £328,631,311. To this huge sum, no doubt, a few odd millions will be added this year.—l am, etc., Dunedin, July 21. Barbara.
