MUSICAL RECITAL

Although many music-lovers still retain a preference for the works of the old masters, not a few are beginning to appreciate the better class of modern music, and welcome an opportunity of hearing it. Such an occasion will occur on July 30, in_Begg|s Concert Chamber, when a recital of works for viola, pianoforte, and voice will be given by Nancy Hobson, Winifred Gardner and Alison Tyne. _ So far as the compositions for viola ana pianoforte are concerned, the items to be played have not previously been heard in Dunedin. These are a Sonata in C minor (York Bowen), an exacting work in three well-contrasted movements; a Mosaic in 10 pieces (Walthew); and an interesting group by Delius —“ Caprice,” “ Elegy, and "Serenade” from “Hassan.” Preceding the above items, three Bach compositions arranged by Tertis. Alwyn, and Hamilton respectively will be played. Between each instrumental number a group of songs, mainly by noted modern British composers, will be sung by Miss Tyrie, a vocalist well known to Dunedin audiences. Her snnes are by Handel. Brahms, Hugo Wolf, Schubert. Armstrong Gibbs, York Bowen, Michael Head. Hamilton Harty, and Granville Bantock.
