NEW ZEALAND TEAM’S TOUR ' DEFEAT OF NEWCASTLE NEWCASTLE, July 8. ; (Received July 3, at 6.30 p.m.) > Newcastle, with four star players in the State side against Queensland; was no match for New Zealand at Newcastle sports ground yesterday. Excellent combination, backed by a faultless full-back game by Hemi, won the match for the visitors by 30 points to 19. New Zealand’s last try was one of the best seen on the ground. Thrilled by the brilliant passing and backing up, the crowd of 5000 spectators cheered for minutes. Picking up in his own twenty-five, W. Brimbld sent to Tittleton, to Chase, back to W. Brimble, and then on to W. P. Brimble, to Anderson, to Tittleton for McLeod to score. Hemi goaled. It was football at its best. New Zealand was badly beaten for the bait from the scrums, but the forwards, led by Anderson and McLeod, broke, so quickly that the Newcastle ments rarely got beyond the five-1 eighth. Newcastle looked like pulling the. game out of the fire in the second,' half, and scored 11 points to New; Zealand’s eight, but they were individual efforts. Perry, at half-back,', played almost a lone hand for New-; castle in attack. His try scored front half-way, when he beat seven men, was a brilliant effort. The New Zea-. landers joined in the applause. Only, plucky tackling saved Newcastlefrom heavier defeat. Time and time again the New Zealanders bom-*; barded Newcastle territory, always with several players in support, to 1 be thrown back by the dour New-' castle defenders. Right to the end' the home players threw themselves 1 at thd* flying feet of the New Zea--; landers, and it was a tired that trooped off the field at the endu The game was ’flayed in an excellent: spirit, and the ambulance men had! practically nothing to do. For New Zealand Anderson, Tit-" tleton, McLeod (2), Cootes and Smith' scored tries. Hemi kicked 6 goalsi'l For Newcastle Perry (2), Gill (2)1 and Bull scored tries. Bonnymartl kicked two goals.
