PENINSULA COUNTY

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Peninsula County Council was held at Portobello yesterday, there being present Crs J. Cross (chairman), D. J. S. Robertson, J. W. Harbrow, J. J. Nyhon, J. T. Irvine, D. Rutherford, W. Brookman. W. V. Sturmer, and T. S. Edmonds. FINANCE Accounts amounting to £575 13s 9d were passed for payment. ENGINEER’S REPORT The county Engineer (Mr S. G. Patterson) reported as follows on the work done during the past month: —

Otago Heads Riding.—The metalling of the portion of the Cape Saunders road under reconstruction had been completed. The metal had to be left in an unbroken state owing to lack of sufficient time to complete the job. Portobello Riding.—The shoulders had been cut off the following roads:—Hooper’s Inlet School road, Portobello-Cape Saunders road, Portobello-Wickliffe Bay road. Metal had been spread on the PortobelloCape Saunders road. The contractor had commenced the formation on Kinnaird road.

Sandymount Riding.—Trimming of the edges of the formation had been done on the Ridge road and Seal Point road, and patches of metal spread on the most urgent places. A culvert had been laid on the Sandymount road. Water tables had been cleaned on Riddell’s-Hooper’s Inlet road and Fleming road. Highcliff Riding.—Patching had been done on Paradise road, and water tables cleaned on the High road. Shoulders had been cut on Braid road.

Tomahawk Riding.—A start had been made with the trimming up of the township roads. North-East Harbour Riding.— Maintenance work had been done on Princes street, District road, Dickson street, Morrison street, High street, and Queen street. Screenings had been spread on Marine parade. Broad Bay Riding.—Water tables had been cleaned on Wilson road. The shoulders had been cut on the Camp road, and the water tables cleaned.

Grader.—The grader had been employed on the following roads:— Portobello-Otakou 40 hours, District road, Waverley, 2i hours, High road 29J hours, Ridge road 13 hours, Sandymount road 4 hours, Porto-bello-Cape Saunders 4 hours, Porto-bello-Wickliffe Bay 4| hours, Tomahawk road 4 hours, Camp road 8£ hours, Highcliff road, 2 hours. The report was adopted. CORRESPONDENCE

A. C. White and 18 other ratepayers of Macandrew Bay petitioned the council to grass the district road from the bluegums to the late Mr George Edwards’s property, thus putting it into a fit state for pedestrian traffic. This road was once, and could be again, the pleasure walk of the district.—Mrs M. C. Walker (Macandrew Bay) also wrote asking that the district road from the bluegums to her gateway be grassed and metalled in order that she might complete the metalling of the road into her property. The retaining wall which had been ou’lt on her property was beginning to fall down, and unless it received atteniion before the next heavy rain would collapse completely.—The chairman said that the road had a hard metal foundation, > and was merely overgrown with grass through lack of traffic.—lt was decided to reply that the riding had no funds to carry out the work requested. Miss Doris E. Miller (Macandrew Bay) wrote asking that the footpath in Princes street be continued to the entrance to her property, that the gorse on the opposite side of the road be eradicated, and that the Princes street roadway be widened and metalled to enable cars to pass each other.—lt was decided to spread some gravel on Princes street and to advise the writer that the council had no power to clear gorse on private property. J. C. Wilson (Macandrew Bayl wrote drawing attention to the state of the Camp road leading past his property. On several places there was only a clay surface, which was dangerous in wet weather. —Left to the engineer for attention. Peter Weipers (Sandymount) wrote asking that the main road at Capstan Point, Hooper’s Inlet,, be metalled and that the potholes on the Sandymount-Hooper’s Inlet road be filled up.—-Left to the member for the riding and the engineer for attention.

J. Stokes (Macandrew Bay) wrote stating that there was a damaged drain on the Marine parade, and asking that the matter receive attention.—The engineer to attend to the matter. The secretary of the North-East Harbour Ratepayers and Householders’ Association wrote applying for the erection of four street lights at the following points in Macandrew Bay:—ln the vicinity of the old crusher, Cosy Dell; at the bus stop, Marion street, Colinswood end; in the vicinity of Mi- Morris’s gateway, Cosy Dell; and in the vicinity of Mr Stott’s gateway. Stanley street. —lt was decided to erect the first, third, and fourth lights applied for. A. H. Crawshaw (Macandrew Bay) wrote asking it the council would do something to prevent the water from the roads and culverts running through the property he rented at the corner of Roger street and District road.—Left in the hands of the engineer. S. Raffills (Macandrew Bay) requested the council to attend to the path leading from the roadway to his gate.—The work to be attended to.

E. Green ’Anderson’s Bay) wrote applying for permision to construct a septic tank on his property at Waverley.—Permission was granted, subject to the work being carried out to the satisfaction of the Health Department. RANGER’S REPORT The county ranger (Mr E. Campbell) reported that he had found 17 head of cattle wandering on the roads during the month.—The report was adopted GENERAL It was decided to employ eight men on urgent work at Macandrew Bay on District road, Macandrew road, and Abbotsford road.
