Reports of meetings of branches | are requested, but they should be furnished promptly, for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be promised. The Tahakopa Institute held its June meeting on Thursday last. The roll call was, “ Uses of kerosene.” The motto was, “ Don't waste valuable time looking for an opportunity—make one.” Miss Pearson (the president) welcomed Mrs W. Tubman, of Papatowai. who gave a demonstration on the making of a wool rug with a woolcraft needle. The competition, “Best limerick,” was won by Mrs J. C. | Duthie, with Miss Simpson second. The hostesses were Mrs W. Dunlop and Miss Simpson. ¥ ¥ ¥ The Broad Bay Institute held its monthly meeting on June 7, Mrs A. McTaggart presiding. The motto was, “ Those who bring sunshine into the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves,” and the roll call was. “Whistle a tune.” Mrs A. McTaggart spoke on the recent Mid-Otago Federation meeting, while Mrs Fowler gave a reading on ” Unmarried Mothers in Germany.” The competition, a gentle-
man’s buttonhole, resulted: Miss N. Harris 1, Mrs Brown 2. The hostesses were Mrs Harley and Mrs Arnott ¥ ¥ ¥ The Waitati Institute celebrated its eighth birthday on Friday last with a social and dance, Mrs Ferguson (president) welcoming representatives from Waikouaiti. Kantane, Seacliff, Sawyers’ Bay, Macandrew Bay and Tomahawk Institutes as well as those from Merton, Warrington and Deborah Bav branches of the Women's Division. A bouquet was presented to Mrs Ferguson by members of the committee. The following contributed items: Misses Violet Brunton and Lena King, Messrs Finnie. Nelson. Cleghorn and members of the Waitati Institute, who gave a sketch. Presentations were made to Mr Phillip Powell for his kindness and help to the institute, and to Mrs Stevens, a member who is shortly, leaving the district. The silver cup for annual competition was presented to Mrs B. Wiley. The ceremony of lighting the candles on the cake was carried out by the visitors. Mrs R. Brunton and Mr Orr acted as accompanists. ¥ ¥ Mrs Ferguson occupied the chair at the June meeting of the Waitati Institute. The motto was “A house is no home unless it contains food for the mind as well as for the body ” A welcome was extended to three new members. The hostesses were; Mesdames Stevens, Jones and Miss Jones. ¥ ¥ ¥ Mrs A. I. Miller presided over the mnothly meeting of the Balclutha Institute. The motto was. “Happiness is not perfected until it is shared.” Correspondence included an invitation to the Pukekoma Institute birthday party and a letter from Mr T. D. Pearson, secretary of the Clutha Returned Soldiers’ Association, thanking members for assistance given on Poppy Day. The president gave an interesting report on the business transacted at the South Otago Federation meeting. Miss Harvey delighted those present with pianoforte solos. Mr George Copland, of Clinton gave an instructive talk on a recent visit to China and Japan, exhibiting many interesting photographs and articles. The competitions resulted:—Strawberry jam; Mrs J. Smith 1 and 3. Mesdames Darling and Montgomerie and Miss Laing (equal) 2. Bed sox: Mrs Montgomerie 1 and 2, Mrs Low. sen.. 3.
