SUPPRESSION OF NAMES

POWER OF A MAGISTRATE PUBLICITY PART OF PUNISHMENT (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, June 15. The attitude of Invercargill’s new magistrate. Mr R. C. Abernethy, to the suppression of names was made clear in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. "I have power to suppress names on proper occasions, but I do not propose to make a practice of it,” he said when counsel asked for the suppression of a man’s name. “ Part of the punishment is the publication of the name, and it is so recognised by the law and by the public. There are occasions, however, when the suppression of a name is justified. If this man had been a boy of 17 I might have considered suppressing his name. Every case must be treated on its merits. For a man of 31 years to forge cheques and then cash them, and then expect his name to be suppressed—that is further than I am prepared to go. Publication of the name is part of the punishment. If. unfortunately, it reacts on a family of good standing it cannot be helped.”
