HINTS AND SUGGESTIONS
Stem vegetables should be cooked quickly, and root vegetables the reverse.
Use one ounce of gelatine to one quart of liquid for making jellies.
While you cut flimsy material, if you have no one to hold the other end of the piece, place one end under the foot of the sewing machine and let the needle down; then hold it taut with the left hand while you cut.
To impart a delicious flavour to a custard pudding add one or two tablespoonfuls of coffee essence or strong coffee.
During wet weather let children cut rounds of paper of useful sizes, suitable for covering jam jars or lining cake tins. These may then be put away for future use, thus saving time making jam or cooking.
If your oven has become too hot, place a pan of cold water on the top shelf. This reduces the temperature almost immediately.
Add a teaspoon of milk to the water when boiling potatoes, and they will be beautifully white.
Linen to be stored should be washed, but not starched, as this tends to crack it, packed away in black or blue paper, and sewn into an old sheet or pillowslip. * * *
If sausages are dipped in boiling water before frying, they will not burst, and the flavour is improved.
Milk kept in red-coloured bottles, or plain bottles covered with red paper, will keep fresh much longer.
Do not discard your worn-out lawn mower. Have it converted into a truck similar to those used on railway stations for luggage. On washing day, place the clothes basket and pegs on it, and save carrying a heavy basket.
To remove rain spots from a silk marocain frock, sponge the frock with clean water, and press on wrong side while wet. Press until dry’, and the spots will disappear.
Never touch bronzewear with wrater. Dust well, and rub over with a small quantity of olive oil, using a toothbrush to reach the difficult parts. Polish with a soft cloth.
