CITY COUNCIL
REPORTS OF COMMITTEES The following reports of committees will be submitted to the first meeting of the City Council on Tuesday night. RESERVES COMMITTEE Land for Tennis Courts The Reserves Committee will recommend that the application of the Roslyn Lawn Tennis Club for permission to use a portion of the town belt, on the north side of Leven street, containing an area of approximately one acre, for the purpose of constructing four lawn tennis courts, be approved. The area would be occupied on ■ the usual conditions governing the use of the town belt by sports bodies, the club carrying out the work of preparing the area and constructing the necessary courts at its own expense and paying the usual rental —i.e., no charge for the first two seasons and thereafter a rental at the rate of £2 10s per court per annum. WORKS COMMITTEE Modifications * Recommended The Works Committee will recommend that the following applications for a modification to the building regulations be approved:— From Mr H. W. Cockburn. permission for the erection of a dwelling in single brick five feet from the section boundary, on which boundary is at present erected an old wooden shed. From Dunedin Motors, Ltd., permission to erect an exterior wall at their service station building in wood, covered with asbestos cement sheets. This structure has been approved by the chief inspector of explosives. In each case the proposal is considered by the committee to be a reasonable one. The committee will also recommend that the following applications for a modification of the provisions of By-law No. 27 to permit the conversion of existing dwellings into flats be approved:— From Mr J. Inglis Wright, for premises at No. 8 Springhill road, proposed to be converted into two flats, subject to the partitions between the flats being fire retarded on both sides with fibrous plaster gin thick and the ceilings between the flats also fire retarded with fibrous plaster of the same thickness. From Mr Cunningham, for premises at Queen street on Lot 17, block XXXII, Dunedin, proposed to be converted into two flats, subject to the partitions between the flats being fire retarded on' both sides with fibrous plaster fin thick. Streets The committee will also report as follows: — That an offer from the commissioner of Crown lands to dedicate, free of compensation, two small areas containing .86 poles and 1.26 poles respectively for the rounding off of the intersections of Edgar and Ethel streets and Edgar and Mount streets has been accepted. That the legal formalities in respect of the proposed closing of the unformed portion of Lynn street are now ready to be completed. That an application has been granted from Mr J. A. Robertson to erect a wall parallel to and 15 i feet from the kerb line in Forfar
street to enclose a portion of the street which is unused with his property, subject to an annual rental of 2s 6d, for the use of the portion of street concerned, WATER COMMITTEE Grazing Leases Consideration has been given by the committee to the, question of leasing section 21, block 111, North Harbour and Blueskin district, containing an area of 29 acres, and situated outside the water-shed of Sullivan’s dam, just beyond the Leith saddle. The area is at present leased for grazing purposes in two sections, one portion containing 16 acres at an annual rental of £5 and the other containing 13 acres at £8 per annum. Both leases expire in September next, and the present lessees have no right of renewal. At present, second-growth bush is gradually encroaching on the area, with the result that out of a total area of 29 acres only six acres of clear land are left for grazing purposes. In addition, the boundary fences are in a dilapidated condition, requiring an expenditure of approximately £BO to put them in reasonably good order before the areas can again be re-leased. In view of these facts and owing to the small amount of rental received, the committee is of the opinion that the area should not be leased again, and has advised the present lessees accordingly. FINANCE COMMITTEE Surrender of .Lease An application has been received from Mr J. R. Fairbairn for an adjustment in the expiry date of his lease of section 6, block XLII, Dunedin, situated in Princes street, and on which the Masonic Hotel property is situated. The applicant desires to carry out extensive alterations and improvements to these premises, and desires that the expiry date of this lease be brought more into conformity with the adjoining leasehold property held by him. The request appears to be reasonable, and the committee begs to recommend that a surrender of the lease, which expires on May 12, 1941, be accepted immediately. This will require the passing of a special order, the cost of which will be payable by the applicant. The rent will then be re-valued for a further term of 21 years, and the premises put up for auction in the usual way.
