DUNEDIN WINTER MEETING

NOTES FROM WINGATUI There was a fairly heavy frost at Wingatui yesterday morning, and the going was much firmer than might have been anticipated after the recent rain. Two horses had been galloped near the inside rails on the course proper during the very early morning, and this showed the going to be fairly firm, as the hoof prints did not break the turf and only left noticeable marks.

A lot of fast work took place on the grass track just inside the course proper, but too much weight should not be placed on the times put up, because the width between the rails and the trestles represented a wide margin, and th? exact distance covered varied. A bad light made it difficult to distinguish the horses.

Proceedings opened with Delrain (A. Powell) and Darien (L. Drummond) schooling over two flights of hurdles, with the former leading the way and shaping much better than his stable mate.

Straight Dell and Swiftcourse led Palastyle at the end of half a mile in 52 3-ssec.

Sheeny travelled well when covering half a mile in 54sec without being fully extended. Superex and Sunny Comet did a sound working gallop over seven furlongs in Imin 39 3-ssec. Valarth and a Lord Warden gelding left seven furlongs behind in Imin 36 2-ssec Octane’ (H. J. Powell) and Red Terror (L. Drummond) were schooled over the sod wall and stand double. Astaire and Dissemble sprinted along the back, and were eased up when turning into the straight. They sprinted three furlongs in 39 4-ssec. Wild Career was going better than Ardmayle when concluding seven furlongs in Imin 33 l-ssec. the last five in Imin S^ec. Travenna and Valmarch were responsible for a strong working gallop, finiihing together. Spanish Lad and Gold Don galloped five furlongs in Imin 5 4-ssec.

Norseman left seven furlongs behind in Imin 35sec, the last five furlongs in Imin 7sec. Araboa and Hanlon kept together over six furlongs in Imin 18sec, with the former going better. Half and Half and Cone Peak covered the same ground in Imin 19 2*ssec Gipsy Fair ran half a mile along the back in 52 3-ssec. She bolts every morning on reaching the track. Pink Robe worked over seven furlongs in Imin 39 2-ssec. High Glee began in front of the stand and, gathering speed, ran a mile in Imin 47sec, the last six in Imin 19 4-ssec. He is a free mover, and was not fully extended. Rodeur went fast in the early part of five furlongs, concluded in Imm 6 !-s,sec. • , . Gay Vixen was responsible for seven furlongs in Imin 36 2-ssec. Radius Rod (J. Richards) was schooled over the water jump, sod wall, and stand double. Alma has been scratched for all engagements. but so far as can be gathered the withdrawals on the first day will be very few. Nightwings, Great Pal, Lumiere, Monipere, Sunward, Lazybones, Scrap, Royal Ran.som, and others got through useful tasks.
